Like many of you, I've been experiencing frustration with the iOS app since the update. I was surprised to find several issues reported from different angles. I started to feel like the issues reported (scrolling hang, blank screen, crashes, etc.) and some of the features requested (offline access) were related; ; so, I did some experimentation this morning. It is indeed a "failure to phone home" issue.

TLDR; Immediately turn off Notes Tool every time you open a resource to stop scrolling bug. Yes, I know that cripples the use of the program. It is what it is. See notes or scroll reliably. Your choice.

More info.

HOW TO REPRODUCE SCROLLING BUG:

  1. First, make sure you have 3 or 4 resources downloaded so you can access them offline. Make sure these have plenty of markup with notes, highlights, etc.
  2. Open a couple but not all of the resources.
  3. Close the Logos app (completely).
  4. Disable WiFi on your iPad. (This, obviously, increases the probability of "failure to phone home".)
  5. THIS IS THE BASELINE STARTING POINT. EVERYTHING ABOVE THIS IS PREP.

With wifi disabled:

  1. Launch Logos. See the pretty pages.
  2. Open a resource that has notes and highlights.
  3. Scroll like crazy (up, down, etc.)
  4. SCROLLING BUG!!!

HOW TO AVOID SCROLLING BUG

With wifi disabled (same setup as above):

  1. Launch Logos. See the pretty pages.
  2. Open a resource that has notes and highlights.
  3. Immediately disable Notes tool by going select top-right menu->View Settings and disable "Notes Tool"
  4. Scroll like crazy (up, down, etc.)
  5. No scrolling bug. Yay.

It seems like the scrolling crash is because of Logos 8's (maybe earlier?) handling of notes when the app can't connect online. Something in the guts errors out when the network request doesn't respond as expected, and after that the app cannot update its content. Crashy crashy. NOTE THAT THIS SEEM RELATED TO THE FAILURE TO SHOW HIGHLIGHTS BUGS AS WELL!!!

What's interesting about this is that it's directly related to people's feature requests for better offline support. It seems like better handling of notes, etc. offline with occasional synchronization (technically challenging, I know) would eliminate this "couldn't phone home to get stuff so I crowbarred" type behavior.

Hopefully the DEV team reads this. Hopefully they've been able to reproduce it.

The scrolling bug happens for me both online and off so this is probably part of it for sure. Not to mention the app worked in L7 and once notes hit it all went down the tube.

I have the latest beta installed from test flight and the scrolling bug still happened today though the blank pages have gone away, for now.

Agreed, it still happens online. The "offline" part is to increase the probability of the "failure to phone home" bug that I think is at the root. That's good but disappointing information about the beta still manifesting the issue.

Nice job narrowing it down. I’m eager for a fix, and hopefully this helps the engineers find the root cause.
