(From a Faithlife group post: Tagging> Limits of 30 sidebar view. Problems / Wishlist

Thank you, team, for the new Notes. I never really got on well with them in earlier versions. Finding the new Notebooks are helpful for me studying Theology UG.

I think tagging is awesome! Love it, I would say *Tags are now vital* for my papers, and dissertation research. They are a much speedier way of putting quick cross-reference to a note rather than an anchor (as they aren't always required), specifically more for visual reference, or quick assessments for correlated data. Having multiple workbooks for contrasting topics within a subject hasn't helped me, where as tags have been great, especially if a given author in a resource passage covers a multitude of topics, or phrasing etc.

Problems regarding tagging

  • Unfortunately, I have more than 30 tagged terms. Which means they are not all displayed in the sidebar filter option. Even when selecting a particular notebook, for a particular tag, I am not sure if all of my tags are showing. I know I can search for them (but I don't always remember the specific name of tags I use "on the fly" when researching. Finding them later has been a bit of a long winded process.
  • There does not seem to be a way to see all of one's tags? (Maybe someone can correct me please).
    • I guess some might say "use fewer tags," however, I don't see that happening when working on 2 or 3 projects, plus personal use. There are many times that there are particular tags I use, such as thematic ones, where commentators, academics and the like "follow" or quote each other, be that phrases/terminology etc. In such cases it is really helpful to tag on the fly, rather than note and anchor, and enter a separate note in the note itself. The same would apply, when using Hebrew or Greek transliterations, following Lemma, roots, and the reasons perhaps a scholar or Bible version has chosen a specific vocabulary usage.

A wish list, I hope would be helpful:

  1. If the filter view had the option to list all one's tags (not just 30). slightly desperate for this, after hours of sorting, I am unable to find all my tagged work.
  2. That tags were listed alphabetically in the filter view (please).
  3. Tags need to be found in searches. Especially if you run a search for a specific term that the search is covering resources, documents, but also one's notes body, but also for those notes that are tagged with the term.
  4. It would be wonderful to have a specific place/section to manage and edit tags. Apart from the obvious: one cannot see what tags have been made or available because of the limit of 30 in list view. It could also be a place where we can delete old ones or fix manual input errors; i.e. I created two tags with the same name but I accidentally capitalised one and not the the other, and it now there are two separate tags. Add colours to tags (see next). Plus the ability to rename if you have a better option.
  5. The ability to colour code tags. Especially helpful if one uses thematic tagging. Or some of us respond better to colour cues. I would think this could be used in two ways.
    1. The colourisation of the tag could be evident in the filter view. (Even if this was limited to same as the basic highlight colour options palette).
    2. Provides a quick visual reference when scrolling through a notebook's tagged notes, as I find the writing in the tags currently is quite small in the grey tagging box. Colour coding means that I could see if I have missed an essential tag as I often will scroll back through the day's researching to see what notes/tagging has been done, and how I have tagged it.
  6. Hover-over note in a resource. Would be really helpful to see albeit brief if necessary, the note's contents. Even a list of the first 5 or 6 tags too would be helpful or a coloured dot representing a coloured tag perhaps. Thank you so much for the great work you are doing.

Thanks in advance for any responses and your consideration and possible action.

Peace and grace

R

I definitely echo the alphabetical sorting!  To me, it makes no sense whatsoever to have them sorted by most used. If I am looking for a particular tag, I am not going to look at what I use the most. I am looking alphabetically.

+1 on all these but especially showing a note's tags when hovering in the resource!

This is excellent, in the trenches, feedback. I hope FL sees this.
