Does Logos even make use of dedicated GPUs?

I recently upgraded to a new 8th generation Core i7 laptop with plenty of fast RAM, an SSD, and a dedicated GPU, but Logos isn't running as smoothly as I had hoped in some areas.

Logos has been running a lot nicer than my old laptop, to be sure: Searches are quick, resources load instantly, and indexing is a breeze. One thing I have noticed that is bothering me however is the choppiness of the scrolling. Some resources scroll smoothly, like the Logos interactive resources, but others, like the Bible, don't. I opened the task manager to see what happens when I scroll and I noticed that my dedicated GPU isn't even being used by Logos. I tried prioritizing the dedicated GPU while using Logos but that seems to have done nothing.

You can typically use your GPU's control panel software to configure a specific program to use the dedicated GPU vs. the i7 onboard graphics card.

George, Have you figured this out? I ask because I recently built a pc that is pretty powerful (i5 8400, M.2 drive and 16 gb of RAM) but I noticed the choppy scrolling you mentioned. I wondered if it was from my mouse that has "clicks" on the scrolling wheel (?). I pondered putting a GPU in to see if it helped......

Can anyone comment further on this? I'm building a computer for a variety of applications - Logos being one of them, and I'd like to know what I need to know as I pick the GPU to throw in it.

Quick note - You need to select the Logos.exe in the Logos/System folder, not the Logos folder. See below

I see this when I have lots of guides etc in link sets. If I de-link them, the bible scroll will be smoother.

The problem seems that the linked sets start working immediately to keep up with the bible, which is intensive, whether or not you have finished scrolling, and this is causing the sluggishness back in the bible. This is the biggest issue for me.

Another issue is if you have 'Corresponding Words' set to 'Hover' in the visual filters, and you are hovering over the text while scrolling. This can cause lookups to occur during the scroll if there are slight pauses using the mouse wheel.

Another problem I sometimes forget about, if I have just reopened my bible, all the Visual Filters have to be applied to it, and that can take a few minutes if there are many to be applied that require the Bible text positioning to change. You would see this however as high cpu usage in task manager.

As for the GPU it should be being used automatically, you can try the following if not.

1) Right click desktop, choose 'Display Settings'

2) From the app that loads Choose 'Graphic Settings'.

3) From the next window select 'Classic app' and the browse to your Logos install folder (Default is C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Logos). Select the System folder, and double click Logos.exe. (You need to select the one in the System folder, the one in the Logos Folder will not work)

4) Choose High Performance from the options.

Kevin, thanks for the walk-thru on that.

I have to say though that for a little while I thought I was losing my mind, because once I got down to AppData>Local>Logos, the only folder listed under the LOGOS folder was an INSTALL folder, and the only folder under that was an INSTALLER folder.

Now I've used the path you described many times in the past and have used it when reinstalling Logos on an existing computer or installing it fresh on a new computer. I was thinking, "How is this possible!?!"

Then slowly... very slowly... the fog started lifting and I remembered that the laptop I happened to be using while going through your graphics process steps, was a laptop that only had a 256 GB drive on it when I bought it. In time, with the addition of other apps and the seemingly unending storage need growth of Windows 10, that drive was running low on space and I had installed a second drive in the machine and had specified the new drive as the location for Logos to be installed. Mystery solved.

Yeah... sometimes it seems the older I get the easier it is to forget things. Thankfully, I still remember my birth date, address, and my lovely wife's name, so I guess there's still hope. [:)]
