Zondervan Exegetical Commentaries

For those of us hoping the latest volumes wouldn't be released together, our worst nightmare has come true! Even worse for me the missing NT volumes have been bundled with Obadiah, which I'm not interested in. At least it's gone straight to development. Looks like I'll have to wait until they are separated and put on sale by Zondervan.

I don't have the Obadiah volume so I have no skin in the game. But for those that do, if there were short-comings so great in the 1st edition that a 2nd edition is needed this soon, it feels like Zondervan should consider making the 2nd edition free to those who own the first.

Other than that, I too am interested in Romans and am watching for the volumes to be offered individually.

I’m not trying to instigate anything...but...If it’s a reformatting issue, then is not a revision; they are just correcting an error they let slip the first time around...So it should be considered a free update not a “premium” revision...I’m just saying 👍😁👌

If I understand correctly, it's a re-branding exercise. The ZECNT series proved popular, so the HMS series was brought into the ZEC "family".

Since ZECOT (1st edition) and HMS are both 128 pp, I assume they are essentially the same. (I am open to correction on this assumption).

If this assumption is correct, DAL is right in calling this an "update" rather than a "revision". I hope Zondervan allows Logos to do the right thing for those who own 1st edition.

I was a little surprised too. Both are the same price on Amazon in the UK in print - although Romans is £3 more in Kindle. However, I've been waiting so long that I'm delighted to see them coming.

They never say so (which is unfortunate) in the preface, but ZECOT Obd 2013 uses transliterated Hebrew, whereas ZECOT Obd 2017 uses Hebrew script. I saw one review of three ZECOT books where the reviewer explicitly praised Block for using Hebrew script in ZECOT Ruth. The reviewer claimed that pastors should be able to read it based in their seminary training (and stopped short of writing that we untrained laypeople should keep our hands off commentaries discussing discourse analysis, just watch TV and listen to our betters)

Maybe Zondervan just made a publishing decision as to always use Hebrew script for the series and updating those where it was transliterated? This would make the series look more academic - not sure if this increases the overall sales potential. But if it raises reviewers' scores, they'll probably go for it.

The use of Hebrew script will take more space in terms of line height, as can be easily seen, thus I don't see any other content change in the ZECOT Obd Update and wouldn't expect one in the ZECOT Jonah Update.

For me, as I don't read Hebrew at all, this change impacts being able to just read-through the commentary since the Hebrew is just distracting and I have no idea how to pronounce it in my head. On the other hand, Logos can't work with transliteration whereas a double click on a Hebrew script word will give me information from my prioritized Hebrew lexicons (actually, I used to think that electronic books by now would be able to be customizable in that respect. I'd love to select from the number of available transliterations one I'm comfortable with and still be able to search with double-click). Probably they thought it a nuisance to cater to their readers so much that they would give Hebrew script AND a transliteration - but this would cost another six or eight pages in the dead-tree business.

Thanks. I've cancelled the pre-pub and will keep the original in my wishlist. I guess the question is whether I need to pick it soon in case it gets withdrawn.
