Search Query Question

I'm trying to throw a rather large net and find all of the instances that faith, hope, and love occur either all together OR instances where two of the three occur together.

Presently, I'm using the following Bible search to search from Acts to Revelation.

hope WITHIN 20 WORDS (love, faith) OR love WITHIN 20 WORDS (hope, faith)

This search returns 78 results in 31 verses

Notably, Col 1:5 does not appear in the list. I was expecting it to appear, because, even though only hope occurs in Col 1:5, both faith and love occur in 1:4. What am I missing?

try using Inline Search (or regular search), but set it to Basic search rather than Bible search. Basic search can be set to search for matching sentences rather than verses. See below:

As I'm clicking around in here, it looks like the morph query doc is also no respecter of versification. I suppose you could build a couple of those to capture the OR relation and get what you're looking for. As a quick check I searched g:pistis, g:agape, and g:elpis (each within a separate lemma field), unchecked the "in order" relation and changed the proximity to 20 word segments and it captured Col 1:4-5. that would just be one part of your OR string.

Basic search can be set to search for matching sentences rather than verses.

The control you are pointing to does not affect the results of the search. It only affects how much context is displayed for each of the results.

You are however correct about switching to a Basic search. Bible searches can only find things within a verse. Basic searches can find things within an article (which for Bibles is usually a chapter).

Greek Roots: πιστευω (Faith), ελπις (Hope), αγαπαω (Love) find nouns/verbs

I'm unfamiliar with the search window/tool you have open on the left hand side of your screen shot. What is that? How do I access it? It doesn't seem to be the same screen that I get when I click the search icon and click morphology.

It's the morph query document. there's two ways to get to it--see the screen shots below. Using the roots (e.g. pisteuo rather than pistis) will cast a wide net in your search, but that very well may prove more enlightening for you. I wasn't thinking of that when I saw you searching for "faith" but I like Keep Smiling's idea.
