Recommendation for Psalms Resource Please.

Hello All and Happy New Year!

This year, I will be teaching the book of Psalms for the very first time. While I have studied the Psalms and completed a rather in depth, two year study on the book, my fear is that I will fail to illumine and connect the various themes. Anyway, I am not teaching every Psalm, but I do plan on always making the student is aware of each Psalm's background, theme, topics, etc., etc.

What is your favorite resource (or two) for studying or teaching the Psalms. By the way, I am about 1/2 way through the Psalms course offered by FL, so you do not need to recommend that resource. Big Smile

i enjoyed Tremper Longman's How to Read the Psalms. Most chapters have a 'Suggestions for Psalm Study' section that might be helpful for your class. There are also exercises included throughout the book.

Cynthia, depending on how "deep" you want to get in teaching the Psalms, here is one of my favorite for explaining the structure of the Psalms and Hebrew Poetry. It is "a bit pricey," but it will help with explaining Hebrew poetry and by doing that, will open up the Psalms to another level of appreciation.

I would recommend Bruce Waltke & James Houston's two volumes on the psalms:

The Psalms as Christian Worship: A Historical Commentary (Eerdmans, 2010)

The Psalms as Christian Lament: A Historical Commentary (Eerdmans, 2014)

They only cover selected psalms, but do them in depth with a history of how they have been interpreted. The first volume covers Psalms 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 15, 16, 19, 22, 23, 51, 110, and 139. The second volume covers Psalms 5, 6, 7, 32, 38, 39, 44, 102, 130, and 143. I wish they'd do more volumes and cover all the psalms. But both authors are getting on in years and it's not likely there will be more volumes forthcoming.

Also, not available in Logos (or any other digital format as far as I know), but excellent, is
