Logos Indexer Overheating lead to Laptop shutdown (Dell XPS 15 9570)

Need help here, I recently got a Dell XPS 15 9570. Unfortunately, the logos indexer causes the CPU to go overheat and shutdown itself. Is there a way we can reduce the CPU utilisation or the number of cores /thread used in indexing?

Currently, I am able to set the affinity of the LogosIndexer.exe to using only one of the logical processors, which make the temperature around 65 - 70 celsius, but if I used more than one, it will go up to 80 Celsius.

This is certainly not an area of expertise for me but it does seem quite unusual that this is happening. Is your cooling fan working properly?

I’ve never had to deal with any thermal problems either, but...

You may need to adjust Windows Power setting. Windows 10 has some built-in throttling If not in Performance mode.

I haven’t had the need in a long time but I have also used a wonderful little tool called Process Lasso to good effect.

It used to happen to me a lot while in Cambodia, due to climate and humidity. (Now in the Netherlands, not any more.)

The solution was to attach an external cooling pad to the laptop. A decent one costs about $15 to $20, and should be made of aluminum and contain at least 5 or 6 fans. Avoid plastic products, even if they're branded and look fancy.

I had to do this.

Previously I had a [5 yr old] HP -- it too was always over-heating and crashing during Logos 7 indexing. [The only program that caused this issue].

Since changing to a new Aser I have not had a heating crash.

BUT even with L8 and this newer, more powerful laptop the fans "rev up" and sound like a jet at take-off during the final 95-100% part of that indexing process.

I'd be surprised if it's your processor that's overheating because laptop processors are designed to run much hotter than desktops. I run World CommunityGrid on my laptop and the processor sits at a toasty 97 degrees all the time. It could be that inside your chassis something else is too close to it or even that your power brick is getting to the end of its life.

I'm not familiar with the release date of that laptop, or the age of yours. If it is 3 or more years old, you may want to have the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU replaced. I have a Dell Precision M4800 that is prone to overheat, and I clean and redo the thermal transfer paste and it corrects the issue.

Mine is an Dell M6800 and with new high end thermal paste and an ambient temperature of 10 C it runs at 89. Keep in mind I'm running the processor at 100% constantly. It automatically throttles back to 2.8G unless I keep it in near freezing temperatures. My i7-4810MQ processor has a thermal limit of 100 so I'm a little within those bounds. :-)

My problem is that I have to pause WCG to get Logos to finish indexing as Logos seems to be set for a very low priority.

Especially on older laptops, you might also have to actually open it up and clean the fan and airways of dust.

The Precision series of that generation run hot normally. My M4800 (fully loaded) was beginning to hit the red (over 90C), but I managed to get it to the yellow (about 75C) when Logos is indexing by redoing the thermal paste with AS5. I'm satisfied with that being they run hot anyway.

Definitely sounds like you need an OEM update, maybe Dell has a BIOS update for this. That's usually how power management issues (including overheating) get fixed.

You have a high performance CPU in a laptop that clearly isn't designed properly for thermal throttling (judging by user comments). Comments above are workarounds that you can utilise.

I think I will try to re paste the thermal paste for the CPU and GPU, it was playing up on a warm day here in Sydney, so hopefully its an one off. But from a lot of comments on the XPS 15 9570, I am not the only one experiencing stability issues when under heavy CPU load.
