Logos 4 being dysfunctional? Check your hardware tolerances

Ever since I installed my
computer in my new case (previously I just had the parts sitting on the
desk, with the hard drive stacked unceremoniously on each other), my
computer has been running a lot cooler and my Logos hard drive has been
far more reliable as a result. Previously the drive was running at 62
degrees Celsius, whereas now it's running between 38 and 40.
I
have discovered that Logos, as a program which is both memory and hard
disk intensive, is highly sensitive to RAM voltage fluctuations and to
the health and condition of the hard drive on which it is installed.
Earlier this year my RAM voltage was less than half a volt underpowered,
which caused serious memory errors and numerous hangs, with Logos
suffering incredibly bad performance as a result. I diagnosed and fixed
this in BIOS.
In the last few days I realised that my hard drive
temperature was above critical levels, causing read errors which
resulted in Logos crashing or being unable to complete its indexing.
Installing my hardware in the new case, with the drives properly
mounted, separated, and cooled by a 120mm fan, has not only reduced my
hard drive temperature an solved my read error problems, it has resulted in Logos 4 running significantly faster than previously, and with complete reliability.
I would strongly suggest that people with recurring Logos 4 errors, or poor performance, check their hardware to see if any critical tolerances are being exceeded. If I hadn't, it would have been very easy to blame these problems on the software, when in fact it was my hardware which was the problem. Not only that, but customer service would have had a nightmare trying to troubleshoot (RAM voltage errors are particularly difficult to detect unless you're looking for them).

Thanks Jonathan. Logos sometimes request a stress test be run in these situations http://community.logos.com/forums/t/17308.aspx, to highlight potential hardware issues.

That's a very good idea. Prime95 is a useful informal diagnostic.
