Bug?: FL Connect Preview Resources

I'm not sure how 5 Connect resources for February were downloaded (I have Auto Download set to NO for new and updated resources). They have temporary licenses, as expected, but they are listed in Library as "Not on this device", and the resource previews supported that with an invitation to "Download now". After I clicked that for "Historical Ecclesiology", it was notified as "Updated" and listed as "On this device".

I restored 2x Anglican resources I had previously removed, and still had a download notification. This turned out to be one of the preview resources "Christian Community in history, Vol 2". So that left three preview resources as "Not on this device". I selected "Download now" on one of those, but it immediately downloaded without any notification.

So, how are they supposed to handled? I dislike the notion that they download as skeleton resources (with/without notification), although that may be advantageous for users with limited space.

It sounds to me like the resources have not downloaded. All of your resources (except for hidden ones) will show up in your library, and the updated date includes both resource and metadata updates (which you will still receive for resources you have not downloaded).

I selected "Download now" on one of those, but it immediately downloaded without any notification.

That's correct. Because you explicitly asked for it to download, there is no additional prompt to download.

They are not. Just the metadata downloads and is displayed in your library.

It sounds like everything is working as intended.

I just received (15:08 hrs) a consolidated "Updated" notice for the five resources which had previously received separate "Updated" notices (and been hidden).

I have Auto Download set to NO for new and updated resources

I set Auto Download to YES for New resources and immediately restarted Logos. Then I ordered 2 free Connect resources for February (already in the cart). I received an Updated notice for these two + the 2 remaining Preview resources that were "Not on this device", and Indexing started.

Bug: only the 2x Preview resources were indexed. A search with 0 results confirmed that the other 2 had not been indexed.

    4073.LogosIndexer (2).zip

They were indexed after a restart, but that is not satisfactory.

EDIT: Received a further Updated notice for the two resources after indexing completed (I had hidden the previous notice before restarting).

I performed a more controlled test with a Connect Mobile course (4 temporary resources) with Auto Download set to NO for New and Updated resources as per my OP.

    1. There was no download notification, and no "Updated" notice, but Library Catalog was updated and the four resources were listed as "Not on This Device".

    2. Downloaded the audio and video (2 resources) from right-click in Library, got an "Updated" notice, and indexing began.

    3. Hid the "Updated" notice.

    4. Let indexing complete. Only two resources "Not on This Device"

    5. Downloaded the main resource from right-click in Library, Got "Updated" notice for one resource (ok)

    6. Waited until indexing started, then downloaded the Activities resource. Got "Updated" notice for two resources (ok)

    7. Indexing completed for first resource only:

Merging had started before the second one was "found". It still raises the question "why doesn't it get indexed in the current session?.

    4. All four resources are now "On This device".

I performed a more controlled test with a Connect Mobile course (4 temporary resources) with Auto Download set to NO for New and Updated resources as per my OP.

So, the intended behaviour for new Temporary resources with Auto Download set to NO for New resources appears to be:

    1. Library updates its count and resource metadata is displayed.
    2. No download notification and no "Updated" notice.
    3. Resources are listed as "Not on This device"
    4. No indexing

Comment: the average user would not know that this has occurred, even if the Library window was visible i.e. the Catalog update message could be missed, or its significance would not be realised. The Library count may increase/decrease, or not change, if expired Connect resources were also being removed, and most users don't know their exact Count anyway.

Would the behaviour be the same for other new temporary resources i.e. those that come with a Connect library or a free base package?

Would this behaviour be the same for new Permanent resources? Would there be an actual "Download xx.x MB" notification?

With Auto Download set to YES for New Temporary resources,  would the behaviour mimic that for Permanent resources? i.e.

    1. There would be an Updated notice and Indexing would start.
    2. They would be "On This device

    1. Library updates its count and resource metadata is displayed.

Correct. All resources except hidden ones will be displayed in the library.

    2. No download notification and no "Updated" notice.

Correct. Download notifications only show for updates to local resources when you have turned off auto-update. The "Updated" notice only shows after you have downloaded a new or updated resource. This notification is displayed, because it's generally a good idea to ensure that you are using the most recent version of any resources you have downloaded.

    3. Resources are listed as "Not on This device"

    Correct, because they are not.

    4. No indexing

Correct. Only downloaded resources are indexed.

Would this behaviour be the same for new Permanent resources?

There is no difference between the behavior of temporary and permanent resources. That distinction is only an indicator that at some point in the future, you will no longer have access tot he resource.

I had a hard time following the exact sequence of steps you were reporting in the rest of your thread, but assuming that your last post is an accurate summary, then it sounds like everything is working as intended.

If I'm understanding correctly, I think your complaint is that if you have auto-download new resources turned off, then you will have no indication that there are new resources available in their library. I will certainly pass along that feedback.

Correct. In the current version you get a download notification. In 8.3 beta 1, there is no notification (and this presumably applies to auto-download updated resources if that is also turned off).

    Dave,

There is no change to the notification when auto-update is turned off. We are talking about expanding that notification bar to be aware of new licenses, which would take bit more effort.

I agree with your assessment that the "new resources available" notification is most needed for the subscription scenario, when the user hasn't expressly ordered new titles. However, we also send notices about those resources through email, and we are considering how to best use messages on the Logos app Home page. Since this will serve the same need without having to write new code, we will punt on the notification for now.

I haven't had the opportunity to test updates to resources.

I had forgotten about the Notification Bar as I don't use it! When I downloaded two removed resources, it briefly showed a MB figure which didn't appear via the Notification icon.

However, we also send notices about those resources through email, and we are considering how to best use messages on the Logos app Home page. Since this will serve the same need without having to write new code, we will punt on the notification for now.

Even when a user is expecting new resources, they will be concerned by the lack of a notification. So we can respond (in the forum) by saying "it's OK, it's just not on your device at the moment"[:)]. Admittedly, the majority of users will accept the default to auto-download with its notifications, but...

It seems contradictory to consider messages on the Home page, when you've made every effort to avoid doing that with the "Updated" notice. But that's not the same thing as a notification where it is normally expected. What do you mean by "punt"?

So you're not taking a British punt on it i.e. do it!?

But "cloud" users with limited drive space will need to know the benefit of not auto-downloading new resources.
