Endless (re-)indexing

As I have mentioned in these forums before my L4 just endlessly reindexes.

In the past 2 weeks it has indexed the full library 3 times. I keep pausing the indexing when I am using the computer but let it do whatever it wants at other times. Several times I have let it run overnight for 2 nights. The indexing completes. All is well and then it starts indexing again.

I note a reference in the log file to an old format ....."Doing a full re-index because the existing index uses an old format."

Also, the indexing time guess is terrible ..... just keeps on increasing.

When i started this message the indexer told me that it had 12minurtes to go. Now it tells me there are 2h11m. Past experience tells me that this will soon be 41h or thereabouts.

I've had the same problem a couple of times before. Check your index log, your error/crash log, and your Logos log. Here are the fixes I used in different situations.

    1. Check your hardware. My Logos 4 hard drive was in an unventilated case, and had another hard drive stacked directly on top of it. The drive was running at 62 degrees C, when it should have been no higher than 40 degrees C. This was causing read errors which only showed up obliquely in the error logs. Moving the drive to a more intelligent location has resulted in temperatures staying between 38 and 41 degrees, and no more read errors

    2. Corrupt index. This is usually indicated in the indexer log file or index crash log file. Delete your entire index folder and restart to rebuild the index.

    3. Corrupt installation. This is usually indicated in the Logos 4 log file. Reinstall.

If the log states each time that it has finished indexing all resources then Jonathan's suggestions re the hard drive environment should be considered. If it is a laptop the choices are limited but you should thoroughly check the hard drive for errors and see if the fan is utilised excessively (had you noticed this during indexing?).
