Help Moving Logos to External SSD Drive

I think I saw somewhere where people spoke about the speed upgrade with an SSD.

I have an internal SSD, but it's 250G.

I just purchased a 2T external SSD and was wondering if moving my Logos files over to the external drive is advisable, and if so, how to do it? My APPDATA alone is almost 60Gigs!

I'm pretty sure I read in a thread on SD cards that external/removable installations are NOT SUPPORTED by Logos. This snip from the System Requirements page seems to support that.

Here is a wiki page link that may give you the information you're looking for. What you are talking about doing is not supported, and could create issues.

Note that the ability choose the resources that will be installed is currently in beta testing. This may be a solution for you, without trying to install on an external drive.

Suggest doing SSD speed test since capacity is different than reading & writing performance. An option for APPDATA relocation is custom installation on Windows to a different drive (Method 2 or 3) => Quick Installation onto multiple computers (some Windows laptops can have more than one SSD internally). Years ago used Clonezilla to duplicate a Windows installation (replaced internal drive with larger capacity SSD).

By way of example, my internal 250 GB SSD has ~600 MB/s write speed that is faster than ~350 MB/s for an external 512 GB SSD (so my larger capacity SSD takes almost twice as long to write stuff). Caveat: internal SSD lacked storage capacity for 123.54 GB of Logos files (with 21.77 GB Library Index that needs ~25 GB of free space for index merging) so used Logos Wiki => Install in different folder or drive to relocate 94.45 GB Resources folder onto external SSD (plus have experienced USB external SSD having a couple surprise ejects on macOS Mojave 10.14.3 that crashed Logos 8). Personally choose an external SSD for 27" iMac with 5K Retina Display because replacing internal SSD is technically challenging due to glass being glued to frame.

As far as I know, unless your external drive is consistently assigned a particular drive letter (such as E:), Logos may break. There are ways to achieve this, but it's a hassle for most.

I have the same situation. I bought a computer with 256gb internal ssd primarily for logos and then keep an external hard drive for everything else.

As far as I know, unless your external drive is consistently assigned a particular drive letter (such as E:), Logos may break. There are ways to achieve this, but it's a hassle for most.

An external drive is acceptable, so move your Logos folder as per the wiki article. But first assign a permanent drive letter:-

Use WIN+X keys to open an App menu (assuming Windows 10)
Select Disk Management
Right-click on the current drive in the bottom diagram, showing disk drives/partitions
Select "Change Drive Letters..." and choose your new drive letter

if is the current drive letter, then select E: (or any other letter that is available)
thereafter, when you re-connect that drive it will be assigned the E: letter, which ensures that any apps on the drive will always be "found".

You also need to keep in mind that no matter how fast the external drive is, it will be severely limited by the interface it is plugged into. Even USB 3 is vastly slower than any internal drive interface (400-500 mBps for old Sata III). Most USB 3 devices in real use do not even reach 100MBps (most are half that at best), so you are looking at a serious hit in performance, especially with a library that large.

USB 3 is too slow for serious work like logos. U would need usb 3.1 gen2 at minimum to see faster speeds. But it is possibly true that regardless logos is not suitable to run on external drives if speed is whats needed.

The OP has a 2TB external SSD, and if speed is half that of an internal SSD (per KS4J), it's still many times faster than a fast HDD!

On macOS, used Blackmagic Disk Speed Test to compare internal and external SSD performance, which showed 512 GB SSD bargain $ 49.99 matches description of up to 350 MB/s write (while larger capacity 1 TB SSD has up to 500 MB/s write while costing a bit more than twice as much). FYI: SSD speed comparison provided incentive for macOS 10.14.3 installation on internal SSD with macOS 10.13.6 on external SSD. Newer Mac models have internal SSD that are three times faster than late 2014.

It is possible to map windows directories to other locations. You would need to do a search on the internet but it can work. I managed to get my library on a microSD card while the index was on the memory of a surface 2. If you have 250G internal though I would keep logos on this and move everything else onto the external :-)

Can you post the model of your computer, and if possible the SSD model and connection, for both the internal and external SSD?

My guess is that you won't notice much improvement if any, and worse it could be worse.

The kind of speed gain people often said is SSD vs HDD.
