Basic Logos iOS Wishlist - Please Logos :)

As more and more of us transition to the iPad as our primary computer, Logos’ functionality on iPad is becoming a serious bottleneck. My aim is not to debate how an iPad compares to a desktop. The reality is a lot of us--and a lot of pastors--are slowly transitioning to the iPad as our primary computer.

Here’s my short wishlist for iPad support:
Keyboard shortcuts—Logos really needs even basic keyboard shortcut. At minimum the following would be nice:

  • Cmd+G to enter a passage as on desktop.
  • Cmd+L to open the library and select a new book (as on desktop)--should focus on the search entry field so you don’t have to tap the screen to type a book name.
  • Cmd+F to run a search.
  • Keyboard navigation to navigate open books. Something that lets you move left and right through everything you have open and potentially activate the overview window as well.

Better interlinear support—We really need some kind of basic interlinear. Even a simple inline interlinear would work allowing easy options to search a word or look it up in preferred lexicons. Basically the information available in the desktop interlinear which the ability to quickly search a lemma or open lexicons.

Search improvement

  • There really needs to be a search export—I export searches all the time to csv format to do work on passages. However the iPad app has limited search ability and no ability to export a search to work with it.
  • We really need an export to Word doc format, pdf, and csv.
  • We need the ability to do basic searches offline. Not everyone is online 24 hours a day.
  • When a search cannot run offline it should give a message to that effect. The current message just says “no results matched” which is not always (usually) true. It should say the search did not run because Logos is offline.

Copy Bible verses—has been mentioned many times :)

Siri Shortcuts--Make as many of these features as possible available to Siri shortcut for serious workflow capability. At minimum, Copy Bible Verses should be available in Siri Shortcuts. It should be possible to open Logos an activate books, guides, etc via shortcuts.

Offline Capability-Retain as much offline capability as possible for opening books, reading books, and doing basic searches. Much of the world doesn’t have full-time high speed wifi and even those who do get on planes or may not always want to be online :) Of course it would not be easy by any means to duplicate everything the desktop does offline on the iPad, but a lot of basic functionality should work offline on the iPad as it does on the desktop.

Please say this is coming with Logos 9 (or before!)

    I thought of two more:

When you copy/paste from a resource like a commentary we really need the proper citation.

When reading a commentary it would also be nice to be able to put in a reference and automatically switch to another commentary in the series like you can on Mac. For example, if you are reading a commentary on John you can put a reference from Matthew and Logos loads the Matthew commentary if there is one in the set.

In the absence of this - if you have a Bible and Commentary synched, then changing the Bible reference to another book will cause the commentary to update to the relevant commentary (if any) in the series

    My two perennial requests:

    • Improve search results - if I'm searching a single resource, I want to see a number of hits. If I'm searching multiple resources, I would love to have results that are expandible/collapsible by resource, and when expanded shows the number of hits
    • Make all images (or those beyond a small size limit) viewable full screen and "zoomable" - every reading app except Logos will let me do this - I want to be able to use atlases on my phone, or read inscriptions on coins/statues etc - I can see that the images are detailed enough for me to do this if only I could make them bigger!

    New request:

    • Keep guides/search results saved until they are closed so that flipping between tabs won't force them to reload and make you wait for them to populate again.

This is a very solid list of constructive suggestions which are both useful and doable.

Added to this list is some support of visual filters. If something like those by morphology search is too inefficient to work well on iPad, I would like to at least have those such as the discourse dataset on bibles supporting reverse interlinear.

I like how you start by the keyboard shortcuts first. It is an area most iPad apps has overlooked. This is one area separates “Consuming vs producing” kind of apps, and right now the iOS Logos is still pretty much for consuming only.

Books and iPad really goes well together. Anyone who has been reading on the iPad would hate to read on a ”computer monitor“ again. I hope the user base of Logos using iPad is large enough for them to make sense to focus more here. iPad can be uniquely challeging where it belongs to mobile (so it is developed as part of the iPhone/Android phone kind of small screen device) but it‘s laptop size screen provides interesting applications or more power use than leisure reading. Sadly android doesn’t quite have a counterpart (in terms of market share) so develop mobile version for the big screen is essentially developing for the iPad only.

on Community pricing there’s a bid on Windows store version of logos: https://www.logos.com/product/50060/windows-universal-bible-app . May be if it turns out to be succesful, then as they start to develop the Windows store version (ie part of the mobile version) which is typically used for larger screen with keyboard where one might have the ability to run desktop Logos instead, then they will have the incentive to make it more of feature parity with the desktop version, and if so it will indirectly benefits the iPad users.

So by the way, everyone please bid on the windows store Logos in community pricing. There will be a gift from them. And even if one doesn't use Windows (I don't), it will be great to have it available, and it's development can indirectly benefit us if one use any of the mobile versions.

I prefer search across commentary but how do you sync bible and a commentary? This is probably obvious but I can't figure out how to do this.

To sync resources - tap the Layouts button

Then tap the sync button (top left)

Tap the sunc icon (bottom right) of the resources you want to sync

Also, inline search within same tab would be good to add
