Excellent. Thank you.
[Y][Y] and John Gill is coming soon!
Toplady is an amazingly interesting figure for a whole host of reasons, he has had an awful press for speaking up about Wesley forging his signature on a crude misrepresentation of his work but here are seveal things that you may not know about Toplady:
Toplady has been deeply misrepresented by the following generations, while he did have an acerbic wit he was kind, generous and polite to a fault, with a deep love for the Church. He was incredibly ecumenical while at the same time being a loyal churchman.
I would love to see this reach production, he stands head and shoulders above his contemporaies (with the exception of Gill and Whitefield).
One year later, this pre-pub needs a bump and more support!
Rock of Ages is such a great, deep and multi-faceted hymn, Toplady fought for the Church at great cost to his standing and health. His writings are deeply illuminating whether you agree with him or not. Who could not warm to his great hymn:
WOOT!!!!

I'd feel it was very unfair if my dogs went to Heaven, but not my cats! Not being convinced about the eternal prospects of my dearly beloved dogs (and cats!), I try to give them the best possible time during their short stay on Planet Earth. I see them as on loan from God, and pray that it will be a long loan - it tends not to be, but they give me much joy and enjoy their usually short lives to the full. The Bektashi have a beautiful proverb, which they tend not to take too seriously: He who has mercy on the humblest creature, be it man or beast, Allah will have mercy on him. No,I'm not really suggesting we can earn salvation by supporting animal rights.... Tho we have a Dog-in-a-Bag puppet, who is friendly with my dog Andi (my avatar) and gets up to all sorts of mischief with Andi, or at his instigation, whose (mis)adventures usually lead us on to the theme of the day's Bible story...
He has a snuffbox with a picture of Calvin on it
" I must trouble you with my written thanks for the polite instance of your esteem, which arrived here to-day. You have made me the obliged owner of the neatest snuff-box I ever possessed. Nor can I at any time have recourse to its contents without being reminded of two most valuable persons, namely, the donor, and of that admirable Reformer whose profile decorates the cover. What will the Arminians say, should they hear of my receiving such an 'Antinomian' present? Snufftaking will be doubly heretical out of a box ornamented with John Calvin's head in demi-relievo. Every blessing attend you, and may God's Holy Spirit give both you and me to experience daily and hourly the refining and enlivening power of the gospel."
Feisty.
JRS: I must be tired, I just about giggled out of my chair.
He was scared of riding a horse
One critic wrote, "Mr. Toplady believes in absolute predestination, and yet he is loath to ride on horse-back for fear of breaking his neck."
To which Toplady replied, "True, and perhaps that very fear may be an appointed means of preserving my neck unbroken."
Just one more ...
Toplady was asked, "Would you, if you were God, create any being to misery?"
Toplady's reply was, "When I am God, I will tell you."
Quite a character. I look forward to meeting him some day ...
