Monthly Subscriptions for Access to All Logos Resources. How much are you willing to pay.

I am thinking cloud computing. How much should Logos charge per month, (what would you be willing to pay) for access to everything available in Logos via the cloud.

A. $70.00

B. 50.00

C. 30.00

D. Other

I could squeeze in $30.00. What are your thoughts?

Subscription pricing is an awesome thought! I would give up some other things if it would come to reality. The only worry I would have, however, is if the majority of users went this route, would Logos be inclined to release new resources at their current rate? I could see the rate of new resources going down, because they would be getting substantial income from the subscribers and not depending on luring people with new products. Even so, I could make $50 happen but that is about it. I would do it mainly for word study and topic type books.

Plus, taking in the stewardship factor, over a given period of time, what do I have to show for my money if Logos ever goes belly up or I cancel? Nothing. At least with the model now, I'm buying what I need/want and can rest knowing that I own these resources even if I don't ever give Logos another dime or if they cease to exist.

I don't think that the subscription model will succeed, at least not with electronic books for a single user. For me, I can not see paying a subscription price for something that I
can either purchase outright from another software company, or from a print
publisher.

Although, it works well in high end business applications for several reasons:

Live 24/7/365 support
Constant updates to keep up with industry standards
The availability of individual custom interfaces
Full integration with the customer's other software (regardless of publisher)

What I'm thinking is you can purchase the resource, and for what you do not own, you "rent" similar to a traditional library.

I still like the idea of paying a certain price for say "New Testament" resources, and something else if I go outside my preferred area.

Some resources I cannot afford, and may only want to use it once or twice. That is where the "loan", "rent" program comes in.

Under those conditions a monthly fee still wouldn't appeal to me. Now a fee for access to book or collection for a specific time period might. The trouble is that I would have to be familiar enough with the work to believe that it might contain something I need. There would have to be some sort of master index for me to search against resources that I don't own to entice me down that path.

We've talked about this a lot, and I think we'll have some variant of it in the future (for books where the publisher allows it).

The current model of full-purchase will, of course, continue to be available. But there are some people (seminary students?) who might highly value subscription access to a massive library, even if only while finishing school / writing a book / etc.

I would be interested in subscriptions for journals if the cost could be a bit more reasonable than the current web price per article. Closer to the library parking and copying expense

I might pay a subscription free to have brief access to stuff I didn't own. I wouldn't want to be locked into a monthly ongoing subscription though. There have been so many times when I wanted to do some research on a particular topic and needed to subscribe to some online service to have access to the articles I needed (Questia, HighBeam, ancestry.com, etc.) -- but then the subscription keeps charging to my credit card for months afterwards even though I never go back and use the site. After a while I might realize I'm paying for something I don't use and cancel it, or if it's something I do think I'll use again, I keep the subscription. I prefer to also have an option to buy a one-time 24-hour (or one-week) pass to access the resources, which won't automatically renew. I might pay $30 for a 24-hour pass to access everything in Logos. It's amazing how much research I can get done in 24 hours, and that would be worth it to me. If I used it 5 or 6 times a year, it would still be cheaper than paying for a monthly subscription for $30 and keeping it up all year long. If I began finding certain useful resources which I didn't already own coming up over and over again in my searches, I could buy them and then perhaps not need to go with the "everything pass" anymore after that.

Thanks for responding Bob. I know we had this discussion before, but it was either on the news group, or very early in the Forums. Thought I would resurrect it for those just coming on board. I like the idea of a short term subscription.

The idea of renting a book for a short time for maybe a week for $3.00 or say is quite appealing to me. ICC Commentary is way out of my budget. If I could use it for a short time, and pay a fee, I'd be a happy camper.

Now that I've already bought more reference material than I can refer to, I think a subscription is less attractive to me...perhaps I'd use it to read resources that are non-reference material or which confront my beliefs--but then, how would I later refer back to it should I need to do so? Clippings? I imagine I'd lose highlighting/etc...or perhaps the subscription model would provide searchable resource text but not these "advanced feature" sets.

As I think while typing, a thought just occurred to me...I'd much rather be able to pay a "subscription" fee to enable my wife and kiddos to be able to access my logos library that I have purchased (in the same manner I do, but from their accounts). The per-user license still irks me, and this would be a way to fix that, perhaps, with an "extendability" subscription.

A subscription plan of some sort to access everything will make more sense to me the better Searching gets (and I know that's a plan). I can't find stuff in my library now, much less if I had access to 12,000 - 15,000 resources in the future...

I like the idea. It could be useful to use a book for a few weeks to see if you wanted to buy it, if it was what you needed.

The one drawback for me with any cloud approach is that I do not always have access to the internet. At times when at a conference or retreat, or an vacation, and I want to able to use Logos it is very nice not having to worry about access because everything is on the laptop.

This would be a real problem...but, it seems if you log in to their system they would have a index already made. But, what if it acts up? reindex that! interesing thing to consider.
