Good question. I'd love to hear other answering. I haven't bought a computer in a while, but the things I'd say to look for it:
- PC will probably be cheaper
- Solid State Hardrive
- i5+ Processor
- 4GB+ of Memory

I am 100% Mac/iOS... I would love to sell you on buying one, but 1) None are "budget" models (even if they provide great value and 2) the "full copy of the software" (L8) only runs on desktop (so no iOS devices fit your description, even if given to you free).

I am a techie... I love gadgets. I love my iOS devices and macBooks. Personally, I would never preach from one... but I know that there are a number in the forums who do. However, I should point out: It would really not be smart to preach from a "budget device." You get what you pay for, and you will pay for it in the end one way or the other.

Currently within my reach are an Android Tablet, iPhone and Windows Surface (Pro4). I've taught/preached from laptop, tablet & Surface. I've concluded that paper notes are most reliable for pulpit. (even though I'm aware that dark rooms and windy venues can mess with printed page). I even have Proclaim running a confidence monitor in the back of our sanctuary, but I have paper on the pulpit because I do not want to be distracted by running my own A-V (proclaim remote), and sometimes our volunteers don't advance slides quickly. So as not to be an unnecessary offense (generally, techies will tolerate seeing paper notes better than non-techies will tolerate reading Scripture from a tablet, depending upon demographic of your audience) there is still value to dead-tree printing.
Josh, stick with your SP3. Paper notes are still cheap to produce for the pulpit (even if you choose color).

I recently upgraded my 2 year old laptop that had a 1T HD, 12 GB Ram and an i7 processor to a 1T SSD and added 4 more GB's of Ram (for a total of 16 GB Ram). It may not be the fastest laptop in the west, but it is definitely faster than it was.
Prior to the upgrade, it would take as much as 3 or 4 minutes to be "user" ready, now it is the 15-20 second range of start-up to doing a search and the searches that used to take several minutes now usually takes a minute or less (depending on the details of the search).
I HIGHLY recommend a good SSD and as much RAM as you can afford!!!!!Edited: my total cost for the upgrade was $350 USD (and that included cloning my HD to the SSD.

It's impossible to make a recommendation if you demand "no lag". The first time you open a panel in your layout there is "lag". Thereafter, there is usually little or no "lag". Low-end systems will usually have more lag than high-end. But high-end systems have been known to have appreciable lag.
A "Full" library requires 500 GB storage as a minimum. Don't even think about a 250 GB SSD!
To minimize "lag" get a 1 TB SSD, 16/32 GB memory and a 4-core/6-core Intel processor with hyper-threading.

Dave, what is your feel for ''full,'' and these specs. I read books and hilite them. My research will continue to be very simple re my 3200 items.
I own courses, but will always read only, never watch.
Storage: 500 GB?...………………….Memory: what do U recommend?
Gotta buy a new computer this year.

I have 2100 books, and manage with a 250 GB SSD. But SSD's are much cheaper these days and my library would be considered "small". Hence the 500 GB minimum. Also, you need plenty of free space for performance and longevity on SSD. If I think I will use 400 GB, I'll get a 1 TB drive (500 GB will not be enough).
16 GB memory would be sufficient.
Intel will release their 9th Generation processors for mobile (laptops, etc) before the third quarter, so June could be a good time for processor choices.
