How much disk space require to index???

How much disk space does Logo 8 need to index? Lately, when Logos starts indexing, the system shuts down and sends a message that my drive is approaching capacity. The message says I need at least 1GB of free space. When I open File Explorer my C drive has less than 1GB disk capacity.

So I shut down Logos, reboot my system and check disk space. At that time I have 15GB free disk space. I restart Logo, indexing starts and then shuts down after a while again telling me I don’t have enough free disk space. When I reopen File Explorer my C drive has less than 1GB disk capacity. Does indexing chew up that much disk space???

Hardware: Surface Pro4, i7, 8GB ram, 256GB drive.

Software: Windows 10 Pro

Logos: Logos 8 Platinum

The amount if space needed depends on the size of your library. I would not attempt to run L8 platinum on a 256gb drive unless I had nothing other than the OS and Logos installed.

My recommendation would be to eliminate some programs to free up space, or get a larger ssd

Yes, indexing chews up a LOT of space. Rule of thumb is index can take up as much space as half the size of your library, though usually somewhat less. For example, my Resources folder is 85.4 GB, and my Library Index folder is 22.8 GB. But it might need more space temporarily while computing it.

If you can't maintain at least 10% free space (25 GB), you will have problems with the drive itself (speed and life expectancy). So basically, you need a 500 GB drive (at least).

Since I have one machine with a drive that is much smaller (128GB) and a library that is much larger (12K resources), the easiest thing to do is get some files off your machine. Music files, videos, photos need to get transfered to another drive.

I have a friend who wisely reminded me a long time ago that you should treat your computer drive as essentially your working drive, not the Library of Congress. Logos, your office suite, your current work projects and that is it. Don't bog it down.

Hi James, When the Logos 8.4 update is released (currently we are on 8.3), you will be able to free up space by choosing which books you do not want to actually have downloaded on your hard drive. This may not be the right solution for your particular situation, but I mention it as an option you might want to consider.

More detailed information will be made available once this update goes live.

At least with the SP4 you can easily add a bigger SD card to get some of your data off the SSD.

Thanks all! Truly appreciate all the responses/advice! I went through my system and deleted enough files to recover 20GB. Gonna try to get to a place where I have at least 50GB of free space... that's a much cheaper alternative than buying a new system! [:D]

Think I'll wait until the price of SSDs comes down enough to where 1TB is reasonable! Again, thanks all! [H]
