I heard 8.4 was going to do something with the recent journals that were released, but I didn’t see that in the notes. Did I miss something?
Many (most?) versions of Logos add additional support (usually of new datatypes) to allow them to work with certain newly released resources. For some reason this is never mentioned in the release notes.

I upgraded from 8.3 to 8.4 and the preference setting "Automatically Download New Resources" was set to "No". I changed it to "Yes".Mark said:Thanks for the update. My only comment would be that the default in settings should be to download all resources set to yes, not no. The reason? We have always expected resources to automatically download. Today for the first time, a new resource did not download and I did not know why until I read the release notes. Not many will read the release notes. And so the problem begins when one is expecting a large update or purchases a large number of resources at one time. How does one remember what is purchased in a library of thousands of resources? I suppose everyone has their system. I am simply saying that I could not understand why the resource I purchased today would not download. So having the setting set to automatically download with the option of changing the setting to no....I would think that would resolve some frustrations some may have.
For users who upgraded their installation from 8.3 to 8.4, the setting for that installation is supposed to default to automatically download all new resources.
For new installations, you are given the option the first time you run the application, and the default is to download all new resources unless you choose the minimal installation option.
Are you saying that this is not the behavior you are experiencing?

I have read several comments in this thread that the expected behavior is not happening.
I want to report that Andrew's description is exactly what happened for my installation. Today I purchased some resources (The NICOT/NICNT SALE IS GREAT!!) and they downloaded and indexed as previous.

Did you run 8.3 during the beta cycle at all? What OS are you using? Can you screenshot the settings for updates in the Program Settings?
Thanks,
Philana
I did not run any beta cycles. I am using windows 10. I will send a screenshot in a moment. But please note: i changed the program setting to reflect a YES for automatic download new updates. Originally it was set to NO
Mark,
I was not able to reproduce this on either Windows or MacOS. I've writen up a bug report to ask the team to investigate.

I'm sorry for the confusion on this. For the moment, this is working as intended. If you had "Automatically Download Updates" turned off, then "Automatically Download New Resources" would default to off. This is because currently the automatic downloading of new resources will ignore your setting for "Automatically Download Updates", which could result in new resources potentially downloading at a time when you are not prepared for a download.
We expect to fix up the auto-download behavior in an upcoming beta release, and at that time we'll change the default value (although this won't affect any users who have already run with 8.4).

Thanks for the explanation. I do have automatically download updates set to off. It works best for me to be notified of the update and then to manually download it. But when it comes to new resources that I purchase, this I want set to automatically download new resources. Thanks again for your explanation.

Thanks. It looks like Andrew explained it well. And it looks like Rick had the same issue I had.

Great to know. Since journals have been somewhat of a big deal/complaint, I'm shocked Faithlife didn't break with norm and mention it in this update.

If Automatically Download New Resources is set to off, will we still be prompted to download them through the notification bar?

No. If the option is off, then all new resources will be treated as "cloud resources". They will show up in your library, and you can select and download them from your library.

Sounds good. Mine was set to No as well. I've set it to Yes. Two additional questions:
1. With Automatically Install Updates set to No and Automatically Download New Resources set to Yes, will I be prompted to install resources through the notification bar, or will resources download automatically? I do want all new resources to be installed, but I want to be prompted to install them through the notification bar like I had it set before 8.4 (I kept automatic updates set to No since sometimes resources would install during class or during a research project and messup my work).
2. Is there a way to search in the library to see what resources are considered "cloud only"?
Thanks!

For now, new resources will automatically download without prompting, but updates to your already downloaded resources will cause a prompt. For the behavior you want, you'll have to wait for a future release (as per my comment above).

Use "Not on This Device" option in the "Devices" facet in the Library sidebar.

I experience this also very recently. Made a purchase and no download - notta. Even opened a support ticket for my purchase. Mac version. I haven't used Logos on a Windows computer in a few weeks.

I'm having an update problem. My current level is : Logos Bible Software 8.4.0.0035
My Internet/Download settings before and after the update are all: Yes.
Resources are ready to be added to your library. Update will be added when the application is restarted. I'm not sure if it re-indexed the last time or not.
I continually get the above message no matter how many times I restart and/or reboot. When I enter command update, it seems to run, but I never get the usual message that update has completed. This problem started about 2 days ago, no problems before that. Running the desktop version on Windows 10.Anyone else having problems with update? I sent an email to CS.

I continually get the above message no matter how many times I restart and/or reboot.Yes, I have noticed this too today - but only on my Surface Pro (Win 10) keeps saying restart needed to add resources regardless of how many times I reboot (I even waited for preparing library and indexing to complete!). My other identical Logos install on my laptop (also Win 10) installed new resources fine - without a need for a restart!. Both systems running latest version of Logos 8.4.
So, Dale at least you are not alone.
Hope we can sort this out.

CS was no help, they wanted me to reinstall.

Reinstall - a confusing concept with Logos!
As I understand it just finding a download link on the web site and installing the program overwrites the engine and will give you a clean basis to work from. This process only takes a few minutes and should unblock any failed previous attempt to upgrade the engine.
If, on the other hand they want you to delete all your library and indexes then one might well ask why the incremental approach of 'Rebuild XXX' would not be less time consuming?

I believe I may have a similar problem.
I receive the message “Resources are ready to be added to your library. Update will be added when the application is restarted.” I’ve restarted the Logos program multiple times with the message returning each time. Additionally, I have shut the computer down then later started the program to find that the message has again returned.
The computer on which the problem arises is an ASUS EP121 tablet-computer with Windows 10 Pro version 1809. Essentially, it is used as a desktop machine and runs Logos version 8.4.0.0035.
My Logos Program settings are set to YES for both “automatically download new resources” and “automatically download updates”.
[By contrast, I have no problem with another desktop computer with the same operating system and same version of logos 8.4 running. On that computer all resources have downloaded and the program is working normally.]
Please note -
One indicator of where the problem may lie is in relation to one book which it is continually attempting to download, but is not finishing the download. These is shown when I highlight the resource in the library, then open its information pane and see the word “downloading” with a rotating circle. So it seems to be attempting to download, but is not completing despite the fact that my internet connection is fully functioning.
The problematic resource is:
Coppel, Glen M., “Getting to Know Jesus: Harmony of the Gospels”, New Hope Gospel Ministries, 2006.
Resource Support Information:
LLS:HARMONYGOSPELS

Any suggestions as to how this might be fixed would be appreciated. Keep well Paul

This is a definite trend that, hopefully, Faithlife is investigating. See also, https://community.logos.com/forums/t/178652.aspx
Logs would be helpful, but close Logos, delete all the contents of the following folder, and restart Logos:

I simply quit using the Go Box for anything associated with study, and either open a new window or tab and open (drag) the Topic Study, etc., to the proper place. That way I do not lose what I have open to study, as when I used the Go Box. It closed the layout without saving it. My open Bible, commentaries, Lexicons... all stay at the proper place, and I don't have to start over again.
Is this the plan or a bug? I know that the people behind Logos do not like the way I study, because they keep making it less user friendly or at least for me. I do most of my searches in other Bible programs, use Word for my Text editor, Sermon and Lessons preparation, Google for quick searches, I do copy the word puzzle for handouts, but copy them into Word. Now we have the Go Box, I guess I am suppose to start my sermon or lesson from the Go Box, ignore my layouts, and search for the other books I use, and waste time? I hope that it is a BUG!

The GO/Command Box is not intended to dictate one's study method. If you are content with your layouts (as I am) then continue to use them. When I do a study, I usually create a Collection related to the subject e.g. Parables of Jesus, and then open resources as needed into my main Study layout. I may save a layout related to a specific study for future use. This way, I keep my search for books focussed and reproducible (in a dynamic Collection and/or as tabs in a saved layout).
If you use a Study layout from the GO box, you can save changes:
- by going to Layouts > Home Page Layouts, right click the layout and select "Replace with current layout";
- there are obvious limitations, but it may suit casual study
- by going to Layouts menu and use "Save as named layout" to create a 'regular' layout
- The Quickstart and Home Page Layouts can simply be used as templates for your layouts.

Thanks for the update! Could someone explain what a "note indicator tool tip" (as in, "Added the Notebook title to note indicator tool tips") is? TIA.

A "note indicator" is a flag you add to a resource to remind you that you have a note attached to a selection. I assume a "note indicator tool tip" is what pops up when you hover over a note indicator.

Well that makes perfect sense [:P]. I guess that my train of thought was in the notes interface and I was simply unable to come up with anything. With you, I'm still a little perplexed by the "tool tip" portion, but your assumption seems to be as good as any (and probably spot on)! Thanks, JT

Typically “tool tip” in Logos refers to the pop ups when you hover over “tools.” The use of the term “tool tip” here seems inappropriate
