8.4 - video anomalies

Since the install of 8.4, I now have some strange video anomalies at start up. Two big white blocks appear on a black background - every time... ideas? I have a NVIDIA 3D card. Is there a setting on it that might eliminate this

Does Logos load normally after that anomaly? Are your drivers up-to-date?

I have a Nvidia MX130 on my laptop, but Logos will use the the integrated Intel graphics unless I specify use of the MX130. I sometimes see a similar anomaly on loading, but it resolves itself.

On Windows, you can go to Control Panel > NVIDIA Control Panel > Program Settings to see if Logos uses the card.

Yes, I have it set to use the card nvidia GTX960M with latest GeForce drivers. And, yes, after about 30 seconds it resolves into a normal session of Logos 8. If I switch to the integrated card, the same two boxes appear and Logos starts up very quickly for the first time after changing to the integrated card. But, on subsequent times, it show the same two boxes and starts up slowly like the nvidia card. When I switch back to the nvidia card, for the first session, it loads quicky and the two boxes appear briefly. On subsequent starts, loads slowly with the two boxes staying for about 30 seconds.

I can't say which setting, but Vertical Sync seems a likely candidate. In NVIDIA Control Panel > Global Settings, is it set to "Use the 3D Application Setting"? Otherwise, click Restore. In Program Settings for Logos, is Vertical Sync set to "Use Global Settings"?

In the Control Panel > Intel Graphics Settings > 3D is everything set to Default? Otherwise, click Restore.

Dave, I've been experiencing a similar startup issue for a while and am curious about the Vertical Sync setting in Logos as I don't see it included in my list of settings.  I have an Intel on-board display and a NVIDIA dedicated card, but don't know which one Logos uses, or if perhaps it may use one or the other depending on the function being performed.

I don't want to hijack this thread so this will be my only post in it, but am wondering if you know if Vertical Sync is an optional setting that only appears in the Logos Program Settings under certain conditions.

    Rick:

I have a dedicated nvidia card in my laptop. The settings I believe that Dave is speaking of are in the nvidia settings. In it for the nvidia card is a setting that includes vertical sync (at least for my card). I haven't' tried it yet. Hopefully, tonight when I get home.

The NVIDIA Control Panel will allow you to specify which app uses the card. The default for apps which aren't games (like Logos), is to use the Intel Integrated Graphics, and most settings default to "Application Settings", including Vertical Sync; whether or not that is explicitly displayed. I'm suggesting that Vertical Sync be set/reset to "Application Settings" in the NVIDIA Control Panel and/or Intel Graphics Settings (both in Control Panel).

If you still have problems, then there is an incompatibility with Logos, and installing the latest video drivers should cure that.

Thanks for the reply, Dave.  And thank you Bill for letting me borrow your thread for moment.  I'll start a new thread if I have any more questions about my setup, but wanted to post here what I found on my system in case it's of any help to Bill.

Both my Intel and NVIDIA control panels indicate they are set up to let the application make the call regarding 3D.

    • The on-board Intel HD 520 reads: Use application default settings (though it also says it has found no applications with default 3D settings).
    • The dedicated NVIDIA GTX 950M reads: Let the 3D application decide

To my knowledge I'm up to date on the drivers for both but will verify.  Assuming the 3D settings for both units are correctly set for Logos, and "if" it turns out I am current on the drivers, then I guess I'll just have to live with the startup behavior.  OR … maybe I'll try the browse function in the Intel control panel to locate the Logos .exe module and select that so Logos is explicitly listed as an app for which the Intel card knows to let the app decide what to use regarding 3D settings.

    Bill,

I feel like I'm making myself a liar because I keep saying I'm making my last post, but thought you might be interested to know, that I checked the drivers for both my on-board and dedicated graphics cards.  The on-board Intel was current, but there was an update for the dedicated NVIDIA.

After updating the NVIDIA, Logos starts without the display anomaly on my machine.  Frankly, I'm surprised that card made a difference because I was under the impression Logos most likely used the on-board card, but either way, Logos starts up fine now for me.

    Dave, thanks for your suggestions!

Bill, I hope you have success as well!

I have the latest drivers on both cards and my nvidia vertical sync was set as prescribed above. The problem still exists.

I'm sorry to hear that.  Are you able in the control panel for each card to tell it to be the one used for Logos?  If so, I wonder if it might be worth doing that first for one of the cards, and then if no change, remove it from the first card and try it with the other card.

I have never played with the settings on my graphics cards before so I may be way out in left field even suggesting anything along those lines.  Hopefully someone more tech savvy will have a solid suggestion.

I have tried setting Logos to use the integrated Intel card and then the nvidia card... still, the same problem exists. But, as I think I said, this only began after the 8.4 update. Before that, I had no issues.

Bill, I thought I'd let you know you're not alone.  VERY shortly after my last post, my display was doing the same thing when loading Logos after the driver update that it was doing before the driver update, and it doesn't matter if it's the first load since starting the computer or a reload.

I can deal with it because the anomaly only lasts 3 to 4 seconds on average, but it does happen.  I haven't used my desktop for a while.  When I get around to it, I'll check it out and post the results here.

    Hi Bill,

I am sorry to hear that this has been such a persistent problem.  I have sent you an email.

I see the same pattern on my screen when opening logos, but not nearly the time delays that you are seeing.

So, Support did send me an email and they remoted in to my PC and ran dxdiag and found that my nvidia card is only set to be a renderer (where it only activates when 3D is required - no matter how I set it in GeForce app. The Tech also suggested that I update my Intel driver and that that might make the white boxes go away quicker (he says everyone has them, just for not as long). Anyway, I thought I had updated Intel video drivers. But, I went through the Intel Graphics app and found that my drivers were out of date. So, I updated and the white box phenomenon now only lasts for about a second and Logos boots up WAY (a Southern colloquialism meaning, "a lot of" (similar to "heepa" as in, "that's a heepa mess you are in")) faster than before.

    Thanks, Logos Support team!
