I was encouraged by the title until I read that the article is primarily referring to reading fiction. [:P] I must confess that reading fiction is a chore for me but I try once in a while.

I was surprised by this statement: "After all, unlike watching television, it would be awfully hard to read a book with a group or even with one other person."
Has the author of this article never heard of book groups? Or read to a child? Or hung out with their family when everyone had their nose in his or her own book? (I'd much rather do that with my family than watch TV together.)
There's even this thing called Silent Book Clubs, where you get together with friends to just read (each your own book, unlike a book group where you discuss the book together). The whole point is to carve out time in your busy week where you can relax and read. And there's the social aspect of it too. After reading quietly for 30-45 min, you can have some refreshments and chat.
