Adding a personal book
I would like to add a personal book to my library. It is in a pdf format. I'm not sure how to do this in that format.

You don't. You convert it to .docx format, which may be more or less easy (depending on the way the PDF was built - works best if it was from text rather than from scanned pictures) - most simple is trying to open the pdf in a modern word processor such as Word for Windows, then save it to docx format.

search for "pdf to docx converter online", there is tons of websites that are easy to use. If you need more assistance let me know.

Recent versions of Microsoft Word can open a PDF file directly, and then you just Save As .docx file.

I assume that Microsoft Word requires that the PDF file has a text layer as Microsoft Word does not do OCR [as far as I know].
Then you will need good OCR software. [Optical Character Recognition - where the software reviews the picture of text and converts it back into text]

Ah yes, you are correct. I was making an assumption that might not have been valid. Most PDFs I encounter do have one unless they were created by scanning a printed document.

I just imported a PDF file into Word that seems to have no text layer. It looked like it did a good job. BUT every one of the 730 pages was just a picture of the text. It took forever (or so it seemed) but the OCR program converted it to a rtf file that word can input to export as a docx file.
And Yes, it looks like it was a scanning of a printed document. (as some of the text is underlined by hand)
