Just started to use Logos 8 after upgrading. Adding a note took ages - and it's so slow so far. Maybe this is a one time thing converting notes files over?

I have no idea as to your install size or your equipment, but the upgrading process is not the best way to evaluate the speed of L8. Once everything is in place and indexed, it's decidedly better.
I've been on this since L4. L8 is the promised land for me.

L8 is the best performance I've ever had for Logos even on my oldest computer... which is a Macbook pro i7 from 2011 with 16gb ram and an SSD. If you don't have an SSD do consider that as a significant improvement.

I have an SSD with 16GB RAM and yet find L8 so slow in comparison to L7. I do live in Europe however so technology is a bit behind over here. But it would be great if Faithlife could be considerate with those of us who don't have top spec computers and produce a 'lighter' version.

What do you mean by a “lighter” version? You can now choose which resources to download. Alternatively you can use the web or mobile apps. The later should be available on Mac in the fall.

This is what I saw when I upgraded 7 ==> 8, Everything defaults to "ON" to make sure you will see all the new, improved features. Unfortunately, there's a whole lot going on. For example, all my note flags showed in every open commentary; they are only needed in my favorite Bible.
It took me a week to turn off the features I did not want to see. Now it perks right along.

I'm still noticing a few things I hadn't seen before. I used to have the Passage Guide and Exegetical Guide up. I noticed just the other day commentaries are in both.
You can turn things like this on and off, so don't afraid to make run sweetly for you as you work now.

I'd be interested to know what else you did to speed it up. I'm turning off all my notes so they only flag in my favourite Bible (edit: this has made a big difference to speed!). Be nice to have them in all Bibles but can't be bothered to go through each one 1 by 1 turning them on (I had 66 note files - one for each Bible book ... is it worth uniting them into one mega note file now?)

A single mega-file is another way to slow things down. I connected to another user's Notebook with 6000 notes the other day--it took forever.
The following tips were built into my Logos 7 and remain in use with Logos 8. You might not need all of them.

This is no longer true with the new Notes system (it was one of the primary reasons for the overhaul!). Sure, downloading/syncing 6,000 notes for the first time might take a while, but with the new system individual notes being edited doesn't require the entire notebook to resync (this was what slowed to the file based system).

As an old software engineer who for years handled terabytes of data at a time, I would like to know more about this. Would you be able to point me toward any sources of information to learn more?

Given your specs the speed issue is almost certainly about what you’re asking the software to do. There is a speed guide on the wiki. Linked sets or visual filters are often a problem.
