Beta 4: Looking Healthy (especially Merge)

After recovering from the Beta 3 Setup bug my installation of Beta 4 went smoothly.

The bug fixes have improved usability of Passage Lists from a Search, improved the generation of searches from Context Menu and BWS, fixed bugs in the Collection & Search panels and elsewhere, but most importantly Merge is back.

There was a bug with merge in the Bible index but that has been fixed and the merges I performed on the main Library index have been successful and fast (8 minutes vs 52 minutes for a Rebuild). What has your experience been?

Well, there was a new Help file a week back or so.

When I clicked "Merge" in the Search Panel about "New content ... blah blah blah ... Merge ...", the status reported 2 hours for the first few minutes, then changed to claiming 1 hour for the next while, and was all finished in maybe 10 minutes.

Not sure, but a full index build for me is some 2-3 hours, but it says 8 or more after its been running a few minutes.

So, while Merge works, there are still some aspects with room for improvements:

1) The "blah blah Merge" warning could maybe be removed to somewhere a little more subtle and less in your face, but not too hidden!

2) The time estimates for both full rebuild and merge are out of their tree, and are completely useless as a real measure of time expected.

I had a crash with 4.0d B3 in the last 1-2 days, as reported elsewhere.

There have been numerous complaints and suggestions but no response from Logos except only to show the "New Resources" section when necessary and not open it by default. But I prefer to use the Merge command (Merge Index, Merge Library Index, Merge Bible Index). I doubt you will need Merge Bible Index as the Indexer did that automatically on the last update.

In the Command Box, try the command "Show Slight Contempt In Status Messages" might work for you. I might also have enabled the "Aproximate Quoted Messages" command too. I think my mistake was to try most random combinations of "command-sounding" words way back on one of the early Betas, and I think some of the stuff is still enabled. Who knows what else got turned on.

OK - true story: I did try many possible comands to see what commands got auto-prompted. I'm sure there are all kinds of hidden debug or secret stuff there if only we knew. I for one, love options, so we can set stuff to work the way we like. It does not have to be dumbed down to the needs of the least-demanding user.

My next project to to find out what kinds of formats are supported by the "logos4:", "logosres:" and "logos4-command" protocols. I'm hoping the COM API will hand over more controls and commands, that Logos might yet design/write, but does not wish to put on the UI.

And, if you check the notes on "blah-blah" (here and in Is 28.13), you'll see:

Hi Rick,

Although I'm aware of the scholarly consensus that these are probably nonsense syllables, long ago, I ran across a research / journal article suggesting the possibility that these "words" were a Hebrew phonetic approximation of an Assyrian phrase that WASN'T entirely meaningless. I was unable to find it in my limited (some but not all) library of Journals... I'm not enough of a scholar to hold a different opinion than their consensus, but it was an interesting article!
