Prepub Scribes and Scrolls at Qumran Shipping

For me the regular price is beyond my curiousity level. And the recommenders are my favorites, especially Jodi Magness.

Mainly (in my mind), are the caves to protect during Jerusalem attack, the Jerusalem essene's library, or strictly Qumran? Or a combo.

Vanderkam is good. And authoritative. If you like the issues, it's worth the price. He doesn't appear to stretch the DSS vs NT similarities.

That said (for me), it's largely lectures and a summary of pre-2009 (which, lest we forget, is Libby at her best!).

What resource is best for information to the present?

Here, I beg a little ignorance. Most of my DSS reading has been in the journals, and then re-written OT (eg Jubilees, Enoch, etc). Not a Qumran resource per se. So, I looked forward to the above volume, as a catch-up on Qumran.

My 'discomforts' I look for more on:

- The caves seem like an accessibility problem. Ergo the scrolls removed from somewhere else at risk.

- The Qumran archaeology seems still thin. Even the cemetary is arguable (who's there).

- Jerusalem and the Herods appear to be closer to a Qumran thought-process, than the traditional law and Temple, that Christianity portrays.

Ok, I ended up at the conclusions. What a great book. If you got it, you should read it.

- Separates out the caves by geology, and thence function.

- Very militant logic; doesn't cheat.

- Reviews the theories, and where things go wrong, or right. Even handed.

- Not depth-y, until she starts in on the mss's. I'm definitely going to have to 'start over' on several fronts.

- A detective story is needed on the Munich skeletons from Qumran ...she only mentions.

- Animal bones caught me by surprise, and Jodi Magness supports. Some more 'start over'.

Glad I got it.

By the time you got the book until this post, you read the 320 pages already?? Tel me your secret. I'm still reading the foot notes as I go on both in Logos and paper back books.

Well, technically, maybe 250+ pages, then lots of notes. On my mini, the notes are half the page ... well documented.

Usually, I read until I get to 'oh, sure' or 'my, my, look at the time'. But this one just sort of kept going. I still laugh about sailors that had to hide their books from the greedy Alexandrian library! Or sacrificial meals. I have to re-calibrate on that one. Especially, Jesus and the Mt Olives account before the last dinner.The mss, I'm going to just start all over, especially some of the exact wording.

There's really a lot discussed that re-sets (at least my) thinking. The cemetary burials were where you dig straight down, then hollow out a little. All the same (main area). The ears-up part was the practice was common to that area, but not Judea. And as you know, burials are very cultural. Something had to be pretty dramatic to break those family bonds. So many.

The only missing piece, and strictly guessing, was whether or if the helter skelter dumped mss's could also have been from Q'ers further east (today's Jordan), prior the the Roman units finishing off Jericho. Religious guys almost never agree, wander off, but stay near.
