DVDs Not Working

Am I the only one with a computer that won't recognize these DVDs? When I put in the DVD and click on my DVD drive I just get a message to Insert Disc. It does this with both DVDs.

The weird thing is they do work in the DVD player of my TV.

I'm not having a problem viewing them on my Gateway computer. However, I did find it strange that the disks are unlabeled. The only way to tell which disk is Greek and which is Hebrew is to put them into my machine and run the program. My disks came with no instructions. Also strange is that the disks are marked Logos Bible Software 3.

No, you aren't. When I looked at them closely they looked like they had very fine scuff marks on the surface. So I washed them carefully in the sink using a mild soap and then dried them with a soft towel, and then they worked. Could have been dust from manufacturing, but that took care of the problem.

I have 3 copies of the Logos 3.0 resource DVD that had the Logos 4 resources on them. Each one was defective and only one finally worked on one of three drives I tried it on. On the back of the DVD there was ghosting from the front of the DVD that it was stacked on during production. There were also random streaks and spots.

On my two new DVDs I have streaks and spots and some fine scratches, however I was able to transfer all the files to my HD without messing with them.

Quality Control here doesn't seem to exist. Sorry to be harsh, but these are the worst DVD reproductions I've probably ever seen. I respectfully suggest that Bob apply the teachings of his book and fire someone today or at least get this straightened out.

Well, at least I got 1 out of 2. The freshly washed Greek dvd still isn't working. I'll have to see if I can figure out a way to copy it from the tv to an external.

Pam, call Logos and have them replace the defective DVD, I am with Mark on this one, the quality control was less than their best.

I too had a huge problem with the language discs. Finally got the material onto my HD. I am not sure if I should call and get a replacement or not for future storage.

I'd suggest you call or email (takes longer to get a response, but you aren't on hold). (customerservice at logos dot com)

Unless a lot of people do this Logos may not realize they have a problem.

got 'em today, and had to wash them both. Have only reinserted one of them (Hebrew) and it worked. Will see soon about the other.

I'm sorry to read about the experiences with the condition of the DVDs. You shouldn't have to clean them. We've contacted the third party company that did the duplication to prevent this from happening again.

Just posting an update here. When I called customer service and we tried different things unsuccessfully, he said it could be that the reason the Greek dvd didn't work, and the Hebrew did, is that the Greek has a few gig more data on it. I received a replacement dvd, which still didn't work. However, I was able to use my mom's old desktop to copy the Greek dvd to my backup drive, and then copy it back to my laptop, so now I'm a happy camper. If anyone else has this problem, there doesn't appear to be any other solution right now.

Mine had a dried film on the bottom side. Per instructions above, washing them with mild soap and drying with a soft towel worked for me. [for others who might view this]

Here is my issue, the videos (movies) do not play consistently, they skip. At least video 3 on context is. I have had to back up and replay different sections over and over to try to get all that is being said. I downloaded the video to my hd and no help. I cleaned the dvd (as per above advice) and still I keep having to back up, THis is very frustrating, especially considering how much I (we) paid for these. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Before you give up and wait to call Customer Service for replacement discs you might try using a different media player. Someone recommended VLC media player (free) and I've had better results viewing the videos using that.

Did you try washing them or using another DVD player? For my disk that didn't work, the replacement disk didn't work in my computer either. The only solution was copying them to a backup drive using a different computer.

(Preface: this is not a critique of the content of the videos - though one could argue that they too are poor in quality)

I do have to say, I am very unimpressed with the quality of the DVD's. Mine, too, had dust/scratches on the back and will not play 4 of the Greek videos. If this were a secular company and not as reputable as Logos, I would feel taken advantage of and would have spent hours on the phone making formal complaints. Because I know the heart and desire behind Logos, I can give them the benefit of the doubt...though the customer side of me wants to treat them as any other 'for profit' business seeking to keep me coming back for their services.

At $499 (or $159 for that matter) I refuse to think that "just wash them" is a solution to the problem. It would be like purchasing a car, only to find out that it doesn't start, and to be further advised to "take it to the mechanic", or worse, "fix it yourself", or even "return it for a new one" which would only make me wish to return it for a refund and not give them my business. It is as if Logos was pressed against a deadline, which kept being postponed, and decided to send out defective products just to say "we got them out to our customers" only to find that the current situation is worse than the former. Even the packaging was far worse than unacceptable (would Microsoft ship something in paper CD sleeves in cardboard shipping with no DVD case?). Products from 3rd party software for Logos come better packaged than these directly from Logos.

I have spent hundreds (getting close to 2 thousand) dollars with Logos and this is a very large black-eye on their reputation (at least from my perspective). All that to say if this were my first purchase from Logos and this was the impression I received as a new customer, I would never do business with them again - judging that this company is far too unprofessional and the product in far to unacceptable condition to deserve my money.

I agree with most of your rant, but on this point, I must say, as someone who has been growing more and more interested in being "green" in my choices of where to shop in order to be a better steward of God's creation, I'm intrigued by a company's choice to NOT use a plastic container (which uses up petroleum resources) but just a stiff cardboard sleeve. These days when I'm at a store and I see one product wrapped in lots of plastic and a competitor's product not, I will choose the latter. It might be that the cardboard needs to be a bit thicker next time in order to better protect the DVDs during shipping, but I don't think a plastic DVD case is necessary. It might look "more professional" but sometimes that equates to more environmentally destructive. As we've been made very aware in the news lately, these sorts of minor decisions, when multiplied thousands of times over, have a major impact on the planet. I've seen some very attractive colorful and protective cardboard CD covers. It can be done. Logos might be just trying to find its way in a new model of packaging, and it might be good to give them some appreciative constructive feedback so it can be tweaked better for next time. (It might be that they were just trying to save money, not be environmentally friendly, but the latter is a side benefit.)

I have a hunch your last sentence is indeed the case. I understand completely where you are coming from and if they indeed were going "green" intentionally and even stated it on their packaging, they would have actually invoked more respect from me. My guess is that this was a financial decision, not an eco-friendly one.

The reason for my complaint is a logistical one. A nice DVD case (even a slimline which uses less plastic) would be extremely helpful for storage and the ability to find it later. I image sometime in the future I will be asking "Now where are those Logos DVD's I purchased for $500...oh yes, here with the dozens of other CD's/DVD's in paper sleeves with no markings. And look, now they're scratched even more because, for some reason, paper doesn't seem to be the best way to store delicate DVD's." A case, any case at all, would be very helpful.

With regard to first impressions, they could still have a cardboard sleeve and make it presentable or even state why it is in cardboard to intentionally show their desire to "go green." A new customer will most likely, as I did, be turned off from Logos and see it as unprofessional, not "green".

BTW, I still love Logos and use it everyday (and will for years to come). I am just very dissatisfied as a customer and am not used to this low quality of products from Logos; disc's asre dirty/scratched, don't play properly, audio on videos is very poorly done (especially in Greek video 6), and somehow the alphabet is incorrect and went overlooked.

This is certainly not the quality I have come to expect from Logos!

Guilty as charged...I don't even own Birkenstocks...or wool socks [:D] . I don't consider myself very "green" (maybe quasi-"green") and don't take being "green"for granted.

My wife is from Seattle, though, and despite what she tells me about the beautiful summers, I only experience rain and more rain when I visit. I was there during the last snow storm that shut the whole area down...I was there for the million people power outage...I was there when a 30 foot evergreen fell onto her neighbors car.

Put plainly, my experience of the Pac NW is always dictated by the weather...and so far it has lived up to the stereotype, not what my lovely wife tells me! [;)]
