Barclay DSB

I have Barclay's Daily Study Bible on my computer. I had the old software from Providence Publishers (Liguori Publications 1996) and found a workaround on another forum to get it into my e-Sword program. It would be so much better to get it on LOGOS! How do we suggest Logos negotiate with Westminster John Knox Press to do this?

This was available in LOGOS until four or five years ago when they lost the license they needed to publish it. When the license expired, LOGOS offered deep discounts to clear out their inventory. The existing product was upgraded when L4 was released.

Maybe you could find someone willing to transfer their license? That would be the easiest way to get a copy immediately.

You could also contact Westminster Press directly and ask them to allow the DSB to be re-published in Logos format.

??? Why "pre-pub"? Since Logos has already published it previously, isn't this just an issue of Logos obtaining a new license for something that had already been published?

Perhaps I should try to emphasize that I am ~curious~ about having a "pre-publication" for something that Logos has already published? I ~certainly~ don't want new owners of the DSB to have to pay ~any~ more than necessary.

It is not just ~idle~ curiosity, however. Since I already have the DSB in Logos format from several years ago, I was just wondering if a new pre-pub somehow was a revised version or something (although Barclay himself has been deceased for two or three decades or so - but the OT portions of the DSB weren't written by Barclay anyway), which might help explain a "pre-publication" status.

It seems everything Logos releases goes through pre-pub even when it is already going to be published.

However, maybe in this case Logos isn't quite sure of the demand and before it substantially re-edits the older file format it wants to see what the actual demand is. Perhaps it might not get re-released.

Do you know that for sure? I was just wondering that yesterday. I started perusing some of the vast catalogue of Logos products that are not in pre-pub to see if there are more that I don't have that I might like to order someday, and there were tons. I know they might have been there for a long time and might have gone through pre-pub long before I can watching the pre-pub feed like a hawk. But it got me wondering whether anything ever slips past my watchful eye and goes directly to publication without going through pre-pub.

That sounds plausible, Mark. However, I think the DSB might indeed be popular enough to get past the "pre-pub hurdle" - there do seem to be people who have been requesting it, and there even have been people on a certain auction site willing to transfer their DSB licenses to desperate highest bidders - [;)] .

First, some items on pre-pub are not pre-pubs in the normal sense. They are already going to be produced. Logos lists them there because it gives advance notice, allows them to sell copies, and (often) allows us to get a slightly better price. So going 'through' pre-pub might be a misleading term in some cases.

Second, the important phrase above is 'everything Logos releases'. There are publishing partners that release items and we sometimes do not see them on pre-pub (think Galaxie Software for example). At one time I don't think IVP offerings went through pre-pub. Of course, I don't know for sure that everything Logos releases goes through pre-pub, but it sure seems that everything I've purchased in the past few years has, even things that Logos might not have actually been the publisher of. When Logos publishes it (as it does the vast majority of what they list on their site), it goes on pre-pub. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I believe you are right about Galaxie. However, Logos prepares books for other publishers under contract to them, and at least some of them still have their own chains of distribution. Baker, Nelson, Fortress Press, Tyndale, and IVP are some that have Logos-produced products that are available through other channels. Of course, Logos publishes many volumes itself and controls distribution over these.

This may be good for quality control but the world is getting smaller my friend.

Quality control of the initial production and restriction of distribution are two different things. The world is smaller, though.

I knew Logos was centralizing but hadn't heard this. I guess since the Lutheran Study Bible came out only on disc, I'd made some bad assumptions. What's your source?

BTW--When Westminster published the index for the DSB over 35 yrs ago, it was done by a college friend of mine, Larry K. Drake. He had prepared it as a part of his masters degree project.

It was done on 3 x 5 note cards (about 4,000 as I recall).

They were each checked for accuracy by Larry, his wife, my wife and me in the living room of my home.

My wife complained that her name was not listed when the book was published. [:)]
