Cloud Concerns

Firstly I pray God's blessing on Logos as a company, and that it has a healthy future.

But as I see it from what I read, should Logos ever fail as a company (sorry to raise it, but we dont know the future), v4 will useless, with no cloud and no offline install due to no local licence synchronise (enhanced security), reinstalation will be impossible..

I have spent a lot of money over the years on my libary, and to think we might be heading down an path where that investment might turn to vapor, and I can no longer read my library concerns me greatly

So I guess I better make a virtual harddrive with v3, and ie8 on it, and not throw my cd's for version 3 away, just in case..

Yes you are correct that the software can run independently of the cloud. However there is no function to save a license locally on our machines, at this stage. This is a concern, as others have pointed out already. If I have no access to Logos through the cloud then I have no method of reinstalling my software, and stand a great chance of loosing my investment. God forbid but things can happen (anything from a government clampdown on global internet access ( I live in Africa [:)] and very strange decisions are coming from a leader not so far from me [6]), to a destruction of the undersea cables etc to the internet). We are not all situated in the USA and we could have serious problems if licenses are not somehow available to us without us having access to the cloud. I am not too sure what the situation would be in places like Indonesia and Korea.

I sincerely hope that the developers of L4 keep this is mind. The cost of bandwidth to us is also a problem, and we have very low caps on our usage, and we do need the ability to choose when and where we access to maintain our software and institute updates. If for example I landed up with a download of 1 gig that is done without my knowledge when I am connected through a cell phone then it could end up costing me R2. per meg. The download would then cost me R2000 which is more than half of the monthly earnings of the average South African.

The cloud concept is great but it definitely needs a lot of tweaking, when global situations are considered.

I never gave thought to this. The only thing I can say is that I have grown to trust the integrity of Logos and should they see such a possibility on the horizon I would think they would do what they could to address such concerns.

I don't doubt logos integrity..but to simply put blind faith in 'the cloud' to take care fo my license and logos to be able to react is something that is a real question mark of this software... for us who have used computers for a very long time we have had it drummed into us that file management is our responsibility, we must reguarly save our documents, we must keep backup copies of important files, and in this case license files - but that is now being completely taken away from us - and for one am not at all comfortable leaving it up to the cloud to manage what i see as the most valuable file I own.

I really do understand and appreciate your concern. In this threads scenario if Logos goes out I have the existence of one computer to use Logos. Any file I used to download to purchase is now in the cloud...how would I reinstall it? I like the cloud because it makes my life easier and gives me one less thing to manage. But every positive has negatives and you raise some good "negative cloud" points.

Just don't forget one positive. It affords all of us the opportunity to go to our spouses and request an upgrade :-) Yelling as I type "Babe...my hard drive is too small...I need a new laptop!"

I guess (being in the US) I don't understand the issue....is it:

1.) Logos going out of business?

2.) Your machine being "down" with no way to revalidate your logos install?

3.) You losing your books and not being able to re-install them?

I'm not clear on what it is.

As an aside; a way around any of this is something like "Acronis True Image" which I use now.

I make an image file of my laptop; just the way I like it...if something updates substiantially, then I update the image; it all takes just minutes.

When I want to get back to a great install of my favorite programs, with all of my data...I just reinstall the saved image...10 minutes later all of my apps are "installed" and working perfectly, and the machine is clean as a whistle.

just a thought for those who have spotty access.

We both live in areas where the political winds could easily cut us of from installing Libronix if it is internet dependent. THIS IS VERY SCARY TO ME due to my investment in Libronix (that was in part due to their way of handling licenses) and use Libronix and now wanting to see it suddenly disappear. I generally purchased the DVD resources instead of download for just that reason, I can install them without internet (I think, though I have internet and it is not currently an issue, so perhaps it was accessing the internet to confirm the license).

Also, to those in the States that may not understand, aside from the possibility of Logos going out of business, the political winds can change, sometimes faster than you would think.

The idea of our licenses all being dependent on one central location that could easily be removed or blocked makes me question my investment and will make me strongly question future purchases. I am purchasing Libronix with intent for long term use and giving to my kids or others when I would no longer need it. With central license management, I really doubt such a long term approach is reasonable.

Note: I am not at all questioning Logos integrity, simply this central license management in light of the reality of the world, politics & business.

Bob, most of this is covered in another thread where you asked some "what if" questions.

1.Yes

2. No - the server being down for an indefinite period (much the same as 1.)

3. No - not being able to re-install on another machine in case of 1. or 2.

You need a full backup as a safeguard against hardware failure, software corruption, etc. and I also use True Image.

The "reinstall on another machine" I do see now; I hadn't considered that.

I do see some advantages to the cloud (syncing files between two machines, sharing and working on files with others) but I, too am concerned about keeping my license and my files under my responsibility.

Even syncing files between two machines is of some concern for me... When there are conflicts, how are the conflicts resolved. I sync my stuff right now with tools that give me control over how what is synced and how conflicts are resolved. To give this responsibility to someone else is not something with which I am really comfortable.

Making an image is not a good solution if you need to do a fresh install of the operating system. Doable, I guess but not preferable.

Ah, I see what you were asking about and you are right. While this has been partially addressed in another thread, I think there needs to be a cleaere way for users to be able to backup and restore independant of the Cloud.

The use on multiple computers is still only to service one person, so I am not sure why there would be a conflict in your notes unless you are allowing more than one person to use the program to research. IN which case, they ned to have their own account and copy of hte software.
