2020 revision of CSB text

Can anyone from Faithlife comment on whether these changes will be deemed as an update to the existing purchase or whether they'll be deemed as a new book?
Lifeway state the following and given they call it a revision to the text, I'm hoping existing CSB purchases will be updated.
The CSB translation committee has made several improvements to the 2017 edition of the CSB. The adjustments are neither radical nor extensive because we are happy with the work that was carried out beforehand. Further, we do not intend to regularly update the text with minor revisions such as this.
Still, good translation procedure requires any translation committee to be open to make changes as necessary. Many readers have pointed out places where an adjustment would help with consistency in grammar, style, and punctuation, and so we have tweaked certain passages.

Existing CSB purchases will be updated at no additional charge.
Does that mean that we will only have one resource that just gets "updated"?.
if so means that we can not review the changes to the text

I guess it will be something like the NLT, with additional copy-right dates :

That is not a complete list as these statements are in the list:
"We also made a number of adjustments in the Old Testament, and here are some of the most notable."
"The following passages might be noticed by the discerning reader:"
"We list some examples below."
One of the changes made is:
• Changed “idols” to “worthless idols” to more accurately convey the meaning of the Hebrew word ’aliyl (e.g., Is 2:8,18,20; about 15x).
That may "more accurately convey the meaning of the Hebrew word" but in English that may imply that there are some worthwhile idols. [the current reading condemns all idols]
[[Having reviewed the list they seem to be mostly reasonable changes.]]

ESV is the same way, but there is a WONDERFUL note file that highlights the differences. Can't remember off hand who made it but they are a saint!JT (alabama24) said:David Ames said:Does that mean that we will only have one resource that just gets "updated"?.

Does anyone know when these changes will be released by LifeWay? By Logos?

FL rarely gives timelines on these sort of things. I <think> the changes are official now, but will obviously take time to be pushed to print and web. As for timing with Logos: At some point the publisher will give the updated files to FL. They will then have to make the necessary changes to the resource files. I would assume that the updates will occur this year, but perhaps not.

Oh, dear. I hope it wouldn't take longer than a couple or few weeks. I know FL has a lot of stuff to be doing, but these are minor revisions to a major translation. (And these are officially published, as far as I can tell. The CSB online version has already been updated accordingly.) Taking that long to incorporate these revisions would really make having the module in Logos somewhat pointless. One of the blessings on electronic Bible software is the ability to receive updates faster than, or even before than, print editions.

It's not just as simple as making textual changes. They also make sure it is aligned with the reverse interlinear, change any appropriate taggings, etc. It can actually be a big project.Cheryl Sexton said:JT (alabama24) said:I would assume that the updates will occur this year, but perhaps not.

And I doubt most people are rushing out to change their print versions so I would hardly say it makes the module pointless.

Any word or update on this? I noticed that Accordance has already updated their CSB module. Just curious. [:D]

As I mentioned before, FL rarely comments on these questions. I concur with David: It isn't as simple as you might think. If the goal was simply to update the text, they could push out a copy without the added features (i.e. RI's)... but that would not make people happy.

My plan is to make a note file similar to the one discussed at https://community.logos.com/forums/t/176805.aspx when the CSB 2020 text is realeased in Logos.

Any word on the exact release date yet? The first of the physical Bibles with the revision have already been released and Accordance along with the YouVersion Bible app have the revision already. Just curious seeing as it technically is late April now.

Hi Aaron,
Sorry for the delay! I've spoken with our content production team and there is still a few weeks left of work on the resource. However, we received some new revisions from B&H recently that we were also able to incorporate into this round of revisions, which means that there won't be a need to do another round just for those.
Thanks!

Great! I've been away from my desktop so I checked the web app and I didn't notice any changes on the copyright pages... maybe those didn't get updated?
Edit: I did compare some of the changes and they show on the web app. Thx

This is important for the citation features that seminarians need for papers! As I am working on a Doctoral Dissertation for a Southern Baptist Seminary, if I incorrectly cite the "Southern Baptist Bible" it could create unnecessary angst in my defense.
ALSO: Thanks Daniel Motley for ensuring that this revision got done in a timely manner!

I have a question about the reference e's I was wondering the CSB. I noticed in the old and new testaments that references many times show up as "aa" "ab" "ac" ect. However, when clicking on the reference there is only one reference. So, what does this double letter reference repress t?
0 -
What are the double letters references mean. When clicked they show the reference but I have never seen double letters like aa, ab, ac... ect. Have not been able to find any reason for it anywhere.
0 -
Question? When you find aa, ab, ac were they after references / notes a b c d e f ... x y z? [Where z is note 26] That is note 27 is aa, 28 is ab and 29 is ac after they ran out of single letters?? [[Just taking a guess]]

”aa” immediately follows “z”

If the CSB is updated why isn’t the copywriter page updated and why is Matt 6:16 not reading disfigured like it does in my Olivetree 2020 CSB.
Thanks

This is still not updated. The resource received an "update" today (927/22) but Matt 6:16 still reflects the old text. The copyright information shows 2020, but the text does not... kind of makes me wonder what other things might not mesh with the actual text.

Hi Jacob!
Daniel's post was buried in this thread (as yours is). It would have been best to create a new thread (which you may certainly do). I have contacted FL directly to see if I can get an answer.
Daniel had mentioned that they had "...received some new revisions from B&H recently that [they] were also able to incorporate into this round of revisions..." I wonder if there were additional changes subsequent to what FL had recieved which did not get published to us.
FL will have to respond.

I did hear back.
The updates are manual, and I gave them a couple examples. I have been told that they are making another pass through the resource for a later update.

I honestly feel bad for FL. If they do a new resource, they get blasted. If they instead do an update, they get blasted.
C'mon, people. This is all tied to the publisher. You are shooting the messenger.

It is now 2023 and when I look at the CSB in Logos, it is still the 2017 version. Do I have to do anything to get the update?

Royal Hale,
If I go to the Title Page for the CSB in my desktop version of Logos, and select the copyright information and copy it, then paste it here, this is what it says -
CSB UltraThin Reference Bible
Copyright © 2017 by Holman Bible Publishers
Nashville, Tennessee. All Rights Reserved.
Christian Standard Bible®
Copyright © 2018
by Holman Bible Publishers.
Christian Standard Bible (Nashville, TN: Holman Bible Publishers, 2020), iv.Note the part that I've made bold and underlined. It's a little confusing because the reference to 2020 is not visible unless you copy and paste something.
If I check a known verse that was changed in the 2020 update, it appears to include the change -
After there had been much debate, Peter stood up and said to them, “Brothers, you are aware that in the early days God made a choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles would hear the gospel message and believe.
Christian Standard Bible (Nashville, TN: Holman Bible Publishers, 2020), Ac 15:7.I've underlined the word "Brothers". Also, made the reference to 2020 bold and underlined again. My hard copy 2017 version says "Brothers and sisters".
Maybe you can check your Logos the same way?

For most folk updates are automatic. You have to opt out if you don't want them.
I don't use the Christian Standard Bible very much but I do note that the Publication Date shown in the Library pane is 2020
