It's in your title, ergo.
A book that that turns ones text-critical brain upside down: 'An Ethiopian Reading of the Bible: Biblical Interpretation of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church' (Tes might know).
I now really wonder whether imagery/symbols (not necessarily viewable, but maybe) was/is the point of the Diety to the humans. Text-critical is more a western hobby-horse. This week, we re-visited the Quarai ruins in New Mexico (400 years ago; fairly sophisticated church thousands of miles from theological support). Imagery/symbols seems the only choice in the absence of language commonality.

There was a Tibetan Buddhist teacher who gave would be disciples a list of ten books to read - including The Little Prince and The Philokalia. After they had read them, he would point out that religion worked on changing the person - for most people, the images, rituals, symbols they grew up with in their culture would always be the most effective. Just reporting what he said as you might find it interesting.

Or, as I would put it, feed your head, avoid risking real change.
