why does highlighting in one translation show in other translations on the desktop version ... and is there a switch for this feature

This is known as corresponding highlighting - and it can be enabled / disabled in the "Notes and Highlights (Corresponding) section of a resource visual filter menu.
Note that if you do enable it you can choose which notebooks you wish it to apply to.
