Opening in new panels

How does the application determine where a panel opens up in your layout?

For example, suppose I have a quad layout and when I run a search, the results open in a new panel.  Sometimes the panel opens in the top right quadrant or in the lower left quadrant and so on.

Is there a rule that the app follows?  And can we have the search results open in a floating panel?

As you have found, it is not predictable. It is better to drag a resource where you want it.

The results will always be in the same panel as the Search, so you need to conduct the Search in a floating window.
