Desktop Computer Purchase
I'm interested in purchasing a desktop computer to better run Logos 8.
I currently have a Lenovo laptop running Windows 10 but it's 6 years old & a little sluggish in performing basic tasks like opening a new book. It is believed that a new Dell gaming computer will enhance the overall functioning. However, the various options that Dell offers are quite confusing. I don't wish to spend money on a computer that will have trouble running the next version of Logos but I also don't want to overspend on options that will not improve the overall functioning of Logos.
Any suggestions from computer geeks?

An SSD is essential - at least 500 GB, with 8/16 GB memory. CPU should be latest generation Intel i5/i7 with at least 4 cores, multi-threaded. A separate video card is not essential if the CPU has a built-in GPU. Monitor resolution can be confusing, but 4K is not essential; 1920 x 1080 should be ok.

Look for a small to medium computer shop near you, that has good reviews, and get a custom built computer, so you don't spend money on anything you don't need, and you can pick the best components for running Logos at high performance. And custom built computers are usually more affordable than brand names. Plus, you'll have in-person support near you. The sales person will likely not know about Logos, so you'll need to explain to them that it requires high computing power, but has no special graphics or sound requirements.
Some ideas what you could look out for:
- Mainboard. I've made good experience with GigaByte mainboards.
- CPU. Usually Intel is the only choice, but AMD is also good. It's easy to waste money with high end CPUs, as for a high end CPU, you pay a lot of surplus for just a small performance increase. The CPU is not the bottleneck for Logos, although it should not be too slow either.
- RAM. Put in as much as possible. 16 GB is the absolute minimum. RAM should be fast, and also make sure it's a brand or an OEM module. Don't accept generic modules.
- Hard disk. SSD is the best, but awfully expensive. It's definitely the best performance boost for Logos, next to RAM. If you go for SSD, make sure it's a brand, such as Samsung (or a respective OEM). As for size, look up how much you use on your current hard disk, and double that figure. That's about what you'll need. If that's going to be too expensive, another good option is to have an SSD for Windows, Logos, and other software that you might need, and a second normal hard disk for files, documents, photos, videos etc.
- Graphic/sound. No need to invest. The mainboard has everything integrated that you need for Logos.
- DVD/bluray. Usually no longer needed, but having a cheap OEM DVD drive or burner for emergencies can be helpful at times. Or you can go for a bluray drive if you also want to watch movies on the computer.
- Wifi. Some mainboards don't have it integrated. Something you don't want to forget...
- Screen. Large screens have become really affordable. There are many good brands.
- Mouse, Keyboard, Webcam. You get what you pay for. Avoid generic products.Good brands are Cherry and Logitech.
- Speakers and/or headset. Again, you get what you pay for. Some screens have integrated speakers.
In general, you will have the choice between branded (retail) and OEM components. OEM products are not generic. They just lack the retail package, and sometimes look simpler than retail components. Selecting OEM components can be a huge money saver.
