highlight without creating note
This might sound strange but sometimes I want to highlight text without creating a note. Is this possible?
For example, when a paragraph of text has a list in it, often I want to highlight the words "First," "second," "third" in order to help bring my eyes to those spots. Or it might be a phrase like "the most important thing to remember". None of these are words or phrases that I want to create a note for. They are simple methods to help my eyes scan a longer text. Creating a separate note for each short phrase or single word fills my notebook with junk.
Is there a way to highlight text without creating an individual note for that text?

It's not a strange question - others have asked for similar. As to whether it is possible....
Both Notes and Highlights are managed by the Notes Tool / stored in a single database. In many ways, a Highlight is a specific type of Note - one created "by selection" and without any associated note text.
They are grouped in a variety of ways including in Notebooks.
When you create either a Note or a Highlight an entry is created in the Notes database and, optionally, placed in a Notebook.
Is there a way to highlight text without creating an individual note for that text?
So, when you are highlighting text you will create an entry in the Notes database.
But you can choose whether or not it is placed in the same Notebook as your other notes - or whether it is not put in any Notebook at all.

Thank you. Knowing that I can't do exactly what I want motivated me to do a work around.
- I created a "Reading Markup" highlighting palette.
- I assigned a couple short cut keys to markup I wanted to use.
- I tied the palette to a "Reading Markup" notebook.
It seems that this will accomplish what I want to do and now I have access to more mark up colors/options than I originally wanted.

Another approach for you might be to consider using a Search or a Visual Filter (from the Doc menu), depending on whether you want very temporary highlighting or something that persists a bit longer.

OK you might had plenty of time...but here is what I do. I create a new Highlight Pallett and link this to a spezial Notebook...so all Highlights goes in this Notebook and don't fill mine with THinks I don't want there.
