Careful. Some homiletics specialists might be deeply offended to hear homilies called sermons. [;)]
(But seriously, MJ is right.)

For the uninitiated, what is the difference? (Apologies for my ignorance!)

Let me cite a 'neutral', non-theological source that, I think, explains the distinction clearly: https://grammarist.com/usage/homily-vs-sermon/

Thanks for the link.
I always thought a homily was a sermon that got its listeners into the restaurants 30 minutes before the Baptists.

Thank you for the link. It makes a distinction between homily/sermon that I would divide as textual/topical messages. In my opinion, too many religious speeches are swimming pools or skyscrapers.
Swimming pool - the preacher identifies a jumping off point (diving board) in the text then just splashes in the water for 30+ minutes.
Skyscraper - the preacher just builds story upon story.
I'm thankful that Logos provides tools that enables skilled preachers in both high church and free church traditions to connect the precepts of the Bible with the lives of God's people.
