Bug: Perpetual indexing continues

As post previously I have a Logos 4 that wants to start indexing every time I open the program.

Please find attached several log files.

The earlier log files are the result of letting Logos 4 index and complete overnight.

The later log files are current as the cycle begins yet again.

The earlier Indexer (3) log is not complete (3,534 of 4,345) but it has too many errors like:-

Error LogosResourceIndexer Exception indexing '...\BKRC_LK.logos4': External component has thrown an exception.

Logos4 knows the indexing is not complete and will start the Indexer each time. As you appear to have a complete Index I can only assume this cycle started after the upgrade to 4.0d RC1, which forces an index rebuild. Is this the indexing that you say completed (i.e. it happened before 5 July 8pm)?

Can you perform Bible and Basic searches without problem whilst indexing is underway? I'm tempted to force a rebuild but need to know if indexing did complete after updating to RC1.

Thanks for the reply.

I should not have included the unfinished #3 indexer file. It is the first part of #4. I have started saving the log files mid stream otherwise they are lost. When Logos 4 starts a new cycle of indexing the previous log file is overwritten.

The re-indexing has been ongoing for months. Most days I just pause the indexing every 4 hours otherwise the computer goes so slow.

Often after a pause, or after a pause and computer switch on and off, the indexing just spontaneously restarts rather than picks up where it stopped.

As far as I can tell Logos 4 works normally while the indexing is being carried out (although it warns me that it may not). Normally I use Logos 4 with Indexing paused.

About all the errors .... I have no idea.

The indexer #4 log shows that Logos 4 started indexing last night at 10pm and zipped through to completion at 3:40am this morning. This is much quicker than normal.

Sorry, the #4 file shows the Indexer completed indexing but got an error whilst trying to write the new index (that is why indexing re-started).

What is the date of the index files in C:\Logos4\Data\4vvr4mrw.lu3\LibraryIndex\ (these are Hidden, so make sure you can see them via Control Panel | Folder Options)? Ignore any index-build files as this is the incomplete index (I would actually delete them).

Because of previous attempts to solve this unending indexing, I have several LibraryIndex directories (renamed).

Older, renamed directories date back to September 2009...... This perpetual indexing has been going on since way before September 2009.

The current one (LibraryIndex) was created on 7th June, when I made yet another attempt to solve the problem..

The current one (LibraryIndex) was created on 7th June, when I made yet another attempt to solve the problem..

The structure is messy and was created (partially!) by 4.0c & there will be no rest until 4.0d has created a new one! So ... (when ready):-

Delete the current LibraryIndex folder and all previous ones
Delete the BibleIndex folder and any saved ones
Start L4

I have deleted the directories as you suggested.

Started L4.

Note tells me the Indexing is being done for the first time.

Now after 3 hours it tells me there are 12 hours remaining but ....

the log file says that only 311 resources are being indexed.

At the moment 291 out of 311 are finished.

Will leave overnight and see what happens.

The indexing of the 311 resources finished.

(The library still says I have the 4000+.)

Closed L4.

Opened L4.

Indexing started again .... 311 resources.

Can I suggest the Logos Development add a CRC-32 code or sim. to the metadata, and then add some kind of checking tool, that can be run if there have been crashes etc. e.g. "Check Resources".

It should be an EASY thing for the application to take care of detecting and prompting/automating a download-replacement for any resources that have issues.

Users should not have to fight with logs when the application could take care of this. Just my view ...

Thanks Dave. The exceptions in the logs were thrown on multiple Libronix (.lbxlls) resources. Stephen ~ My suggestion is to stop the Logos4Indexer if it's running (open Task Manager and End Process on Logos4Indexer.exe), then go to C:\Logos4\Data\4vvr4mrw.lu3\ResourceManager\Resources\ and delete the files ending in .lbxlls. Restart Logos 4. The files will be downloaded again or copied from your Libronix program (if installed).

Here is an update.

1. I deleted 3134 L3 = 10.8G resources from the \Resources folder.

2. started L4

3. automatically downloaded 7.02G

4. later I found that this 7.02G was 2839 L3 resources, placed each in a separate directory (!!) in \Downloaded folder

5. Indexer started ..... 3110 resources need updating / 250 unindexed resources / 4406 more will follow

Main index completed. Checking 4406 resources that may have changed.

1486 unindexed resources.

Indexer finished.

6. Since then I have only 1491 resources in L4 and the indexing of the 1486 resources keeps on cycling as before every time I start L4, often with a message telling me that first time indexing is being done.

7. A couple of times 311 resources were indexed (as before).

8. It is hard to give you a completed index log file, because when the cycle restarts a new log file is created. But find one index log file attached that is complete or almost complete.

9. I note that in some of the index log files many errors are thrown up by npnf17, the Believers Commentary and and a couple of other resources. I have deleted these resources from the \resources file and from the L3 installation, but the indexer keeps on indexing them.

The numbers from the attached log look suspect. And the Indexer finished with the same error as before!

No need to repeat the cycle. But you should rename or upload the logs before you restart L4 and the cycle!

Please restore your files to L3 and do not attempt further deletions from L4 as they will be downloaded again.

You are correct about the same exception error.

I am trying something different..... what can I lose?

With L4 open I used Task Manager to kill the Indexer mid stream.

I was expecting that it might automatically restart as usual. I immediately typed Rebuild Index in the Command Box.

The indexer is now proceeding, but very differently from the dozens of other times. It has scanned for extra resources. It has found all (?) my resources. It has moved them around to different locations.

It is still in Stage 1 and doing all sorts of things I cannot remember being done.

This might take a while!!

I note there are many errors and warnings with Sinai.NavigationIndex.

Yes! using L4 starts the Indexer. Now you know why I use L3!! .... and there's the printing option as well .... and the coloured text ..... and ....

After all that Resource finding etc. the Indexing of resources has started ..... Indexing 313 resources only. As you pointed out, this means my Bible Index (with an extra 2 Bibles).

It tells me it will take another 13 hours.

So I will wait and see.

After all the resources finding, moving and analysing but before the Resource Indexing started ..... these lines in the log ....

I was hopeful .... but here's the bad news.

The Indexer seem to be run OK .... 20 hours .... it found resources,
checked resources, moved resources etc.

I let it run overnight, no pausing, no interruptions. It finished at
9:30am this morning and did nothing for 2 hours.

I started L4.
Indexer starts from scratch again, as before.

So the cycle starts again.

This is why I haven't used L4 since about September last year.

Find attached the complete 20 hour Index Log, and the current Index
Log which I have now paused (as usual).

I started L4.
Indexer starts from scratch again, as before.

So the cycle starts again.

It's the same error at the end of indexing as before Unhandled exception: System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException: Specified argument was out of the range of valid values.

The main difference from the (4) log a week ago is External component has thrown an exception occurs on 619 resources instead of 802[8-|]

352 occurred on Logos4 files but now it occurs on 424!

The last post here was in July, but the problem continues.

After July, and not hearing a solution, I stopped using Logos 4, for a couple of months.

In September I had a HDD crash and had to install Win7 afresh. What a good time to give Logos 4 another chance!

1. Although I had rescued all the resources, there seemed to be no alternative but to re-download them. But , I thought, at least all the resources will be up to date and pure.

2, When Logos 4 the Indexer started .... 3 days non-stop.

3. A few days later, I started Logos 4 again, Indexer starts again from 0. The log file tells me that the Index files has been deleted.

4. Another 3 days non-stop. I save the Index file (5G) and other files in the directory just in case there is another deletion.

5. Logos 4 then starts to download files ... another 10G and a program update.

6. Indexer finishes.

7. Immediately it tells me that there are 6 more resources than can be downloaded.

8. After this quick download, Indexer starts from scratch again. It tells be it will take 24 hours, this means 3 days.

Find the completed Indexer Logs, and the present (unfinished) logs attached

I can't see (from the log file) any reason why the existing index should have been considered deleted. The only thing that's unusual is the custom install path (which isn't recommended, but is supported). It does contain a space, but there shouldn't be a problem with that because XP users install by default in a path with spaces (C:\Documents and Settings).

Once indexing finishes, please run the following command and paste the output here (so we can see if any files actually are missing):
dir "C:\Logos 4\Logos4\Data\by5tscf3.50v\LibraryIndex"
