Why does a highlight of text automatically create a new blank note?

I like to highlight and underline when reading in Logos.  But it frustrates me that as I do so I am also creating hundreds of blank notes in my Logos 8.  Is there a means by which to turn this off? I aways have to go back and find all these blank notes and delete them.

Thanks for your help.

No the highlights are tied to the notes.  Another way of putting it, is that the "blank note" is what marks the text with it's determined mark up.

If you delete the blank note, you also delete the highlighting.

Repeat: you are deleting the highlights when you delete the blank notes.

Hmm Sarcasm is my love language. Obviously I love you.

    Karl,

adding to what TC Black explained: when you turn on the facet filters in the Notes Tool and filter on Type:Notes, the Highlights will no longer be shown and disturb you:

  • I'm sorry but I can't seem to follow these instructions.  When I get to the filters in the far left column bot Highlight and Notes are bolded or on, I'm not sure.  When I click on Notes as the arrow indicates, I do not understand what is supposed to happen. I get another list under Filters.
Until very recently and ever since I got Logos I have highlighted text in the Bible without any note being created and without any highlight in an attached commentary.
This week alone it began to happen and I can not turn it off.  I highlight a lot of verses while I work and the auto-created note and auto-highlighted bit in the commentary or study bible attached just confuses my efforts.

How do I stop this.  The answer above TCBlack seems to say I cannot but I have not have had this happen for more than 18 months.

    Please help

You can not stop it, and you could not have been creating highlights without it happening.

Whether you highlight text or attach a note what you are actually doing is annotating the text and this annotation is stored in a 'note file. The usage of the term'note file'  and 'notes tool' is misleading to a people as to what it stored in it.  In simple terms notes and highlights are the same they just have different annotation features  or properties  active that results in them appearing different when we use them.

When you annotate the text with a highlight an 'annotation is created in a 'note file' that does not have a note marker turned on but does have a highlighting style set.

When you attach a note to text an 'annotation' is created in a 'note file' that has the note marker turned on an may or may not have a highlight style set.  You can also customize how the note marker appears.

In the screen shot below I have a note and a highlight create in a resource and they are both visible in the 'notes tool'. (Click on it to enlarge).

If I click on "Notes' in the filter, now only the Note is visible in the 'Notes tool', but the highlight is still there in my resource along with the note.

Alternatively if i have clicked on highlights in the filter list only my highlight would be visible in the 'Notes Tool', my note would be hidden but it would be still visible in my resource.

So think instead of having a 'Notes Tool', you have an 'Annotations Tool'.  Within that tool are store two types of Annotations - Notes and Highlights.  Those Notes and Highlights may be grouped together by attaching them to an 'Annotation File' (i.e 'Note File) or they may be left un-grouped.

Excellent description ... I think annotation tool is a great change in vocabulary. Vote at Annotation tool (rename Note tool) | Faithlife

The auto-created 'note' is part of the process and cannot be removed without also removing the highlight.

Pls clarify "auto-highlighted bit in the commentary or study bible attached". A screenshot would help.

  • Thank you Dave,
Two things here, 1) what was happing all day yesterday is not happening today.  I tried to capture a screen shot but have yet to learn how to do this in my Logos program. I can do it in the browser but don't know how in Logos 9.  So I failed to get to show what I was talking about.  Today, it is not happening so somehow I had a setting that I am or was unaware of.  This program is so powerful in so many way and I'm a long way from mastering it.

    2) I understand the highlight/note issue and accept it but yesterday the note was popping up immediately which it never did before. Normally the note is made but I do not see it unless I open my notes.  It was opening itself yesterday.

Both of these seem to be caused by some setting I did not know I made. Can't be anything else.

There should be no difference between apps when taking a screen shot. Perhaps this wiki article will help.

Perhaps you are not aware if it is already open, but the Notes tool will open/take focus whenever you create a note,
