Logos 4 Notes - Template Please

I would like to have the option to be able to create a template for each of my note files so that when I create a new note in that file the text from the Template is automatically added to the new note. The template would be a normal note with a Logos defined name i.e. template and would be edited like any other note.

I don't use Notes much, so maybe I've missed the point a little.

If Logos don't wish to add this, or if it will be some time comming, it would be possible to use an external tool or application that could place the "template" into the Clipboard, so it would be a simple Paste to get it into a new Note.

Someone could write something simple if there was enough interest. Hint Hint ...

I have already set up a template note so I can use cut and paste as you suggest, it was when I did this that the suggestion occurred to me that having a template would be a useful but not essential feature.

I have a number of templates that I'd made in Word and added to Logos notes - unfortunately, they were table based. The lack of support for tables in Notes is by far the biggest issue I have with Logos 4. Such a big step backwards in data collection and presentation[:(]

I was more hinting that people should speak up if there was interest in such things ...

But yes, I expect it would be possible to have a "thing" that sits in the background, with 2 or 3 different "templates" in it. One could then hit some key sequence to trigger it into putting the right template into the Windows Clipboard, and then a simple Control V to paste into the Logos Note you just started.

Sadly, Logos does NOT want to add extra settable key-sequences to items in Logos Favorites, so it limits how "clean" something like this can intergrate without looking too much like an ugly hack!

I have asked for other COM API related things, but no asnwer yet if there will be "more power" comming soon, or if the COM API is finished, with nothing new expected.

So: Who wants something like "Notes Templates" as an external tool that is maybe two keypresses away?

To piggyback on MJ's "presentation" lament, I have posted on more than one occasion about the disaster that L4 is compared to L3 as far as I am concerned. Some people seem to have an extremely limited perception as to what the usefullness and uilitiy of notes are in Logos. Far as I am concerned, notes are just as important as Logos's search capability...in some respects, even more important.

L3 notes pop-up and provide an elegant presentation apparatus (though it could be greatly improved if the note pop-ups could be pinned and scrolled !!!) Because there is no pin and scroll option for my notes, I have to attach multiple notes to some vereses in order to be able to present all the material related to my notes.

I use the notes function in L3 in bible study presentations on a regular basis, and people inevitably ooh & aah over what I show them. Why fiddle and piddle with something as gimcracky as PowerPoint when I can do all of that WITHIN my bible program, where all the info already resides? I get all kinds of drooling responses and queries about the software, and yet when they ask me, I have to say, "Um, unfortunately the new version of the software can't do any of this." Compared to L3, L4 is an illiterate country bumpkin in this respect. That's pretty sad.

Bob heard some people complain about the L3 notes because they pop-up and, depending on the length of the note, sometimes will fill half of the computer screen. The complaint was "I can't see what's underneath!" So Bob decided to make the note window 2x3 inches max, which is essentially a peephole that serves only to remind you what the note is. Good-bye presentation! Good-bye drooling potential customers! This fear of having a pop-up on the screen is so ingrained in the software of L4 that when you hover the cursor over a link and the info pop-up appears, it only last about 3-4 seconds and then disappears! I have had to move the cursor back over certain links up to 15-20 times just to be able to read the information in the pop-up. That is utterly ridiculous...

The thing that baffles me is why the pop-ups are considered to be so verboten? Here's a high-tech work around for those who don't want a pop-up on their screen so they can read the info underneath without interference...

...in my experience, it works every time. Not having a pop-up on my screen is NOT a problem. I just move the cursor to the margin, or between paragraphs, or over a common word that doesn't have a Strong's link attached. Voila! No pop-up! While I'm at it, the fact that the Strong's pop-up was taken out of L4 is also a complete disaster. What in L3 is an instantaneous event taking only a fraction of a second has become a relative chore in L4...taking 50-100 times longer after having to make 2, 3, or 4 clicks, or even much longer than that. In fact, if it takes 5 seconds to look at Strong's in L4, that's 50 times longer than in L3, which is 1/10th of a second max. But 5 seconds for Strong's in L4 is a pipe dream...10-15 seconds is more typical (or much longer), what with the slow population of the screen, etc. Frankly, I still don't know a quick way to pull up Strong's on L4. The info window is an absolute tortise, and it only gives the first 3-4 lines of Strong's, so you have to open up the resource to see the whole entry. Compared to the ease and immediacy of L3, that's a travesty.

Anyway, people who say they don't use notes kinda baffle me. It's sort of like saying, "I bought a Porsche, but I don't put gas in it."

I'm all for any improvement to notes. I understand not wanting to have a full-blown word processor (although I wish it did), but some simple "functionality improvements" would go a long way. Templates--check. L3-style full-size pop-ups--check. Notes that pin and scroll--CHECK! And that last request is for both L3 and L4.

I'm not too desirous of a template, but I would agree that having a good working notes function is important. There are two important factors which have thus far limited my interest in using L4: Morphology searching and notes. I am hopeful that the morphology search has been solved, but I will continue to test it since I don't have complete confidence in it. The other important factor, notes, still is not satisfactory. 9 times out of 10 attempting to insert a hyperlink will crash the program (at least I finally got it to work occassionally). Then there is the lack of granularity in linking to locations in resources -- getting to the same page is about as close as can be achieved. Thirdly, there is the problem of "Full | Compact" view of notes. I don't know what might be the advantage of "Compact" since you can see none of the actual notes. The "Full" view shows the full text of every note which I consider to be more than is desirable. A workable compromise would be to be able to open each note individually and close it when finished. A label which is always visible is also desirable (as in L3). There is some improvement to the notes function, but there is still more to be done. When it finally achieves at least parity with L3 I will be ready to finally switch. No notes, no switch.

Is there any chance that logos could just add a "save as" option to notes? That way I won't need to recreate the same Bible study outline questions as I do new Bible studies.

Have all those UserVoice votes been wasted? Is the top item (by far) being ignored? Really frustrating - what is the point of asking users what they want and then ignoring them? Rather close down UserVoice and do their own thing, rather than (sub-consciously) raise expectations.

I'd like to say thanks for the tiny improvements so far, but there's lots still to do.

Please, please, please, please, please, please, please, pretty please.... improve notes!

Now James ... let's be fair. CEO Bob was quite up front when he basically said notes were what you put along the margins in your Bible. Now just to check, I sampled a few personal Bibles just to see what the Logos4 design template really looked like. I did not see a single table (won't fit) nor any pictures (messes up the paper with the scotch tape). I did see a pressed flower, several weekly bulletins, and a folded hanky.

But looking at this older thread, I was MOST pleased to see George is still using Libronix. Yea George!!!

Agreed that is what Bob's take on what he describes as "Notes" is and agreed that Bob is always up-front.Agreed that Bob is just about the best CEO I've ever come across. (which makes me more confused as to why he doesn't take his customers views on this one issue - as UserVoice indicates - into account. Is that not a good business principle?)

However I disgree with the presupposition of your post that Logos is just equivalent to a "personal Bible". It is much, much more than that. Just to check, I tried to find the Exegetical Guide and Passage Analysis tools in my sample of personal Bibles.No luck.

However, I did find pages of handwritten erm...now what shall we call them...."notes??", comments, thoughts, reflections.

What Bob calls notes, I'd probably call jottings. What I call notes, and what others perceive as notes (e.g. other software companies - and not just Bible software - just Google notes), are more substantial and necessary for studying.

I'm not pedantic about what they are called. I'm just saying that Logos seriously lacks a good, built-in 'study-sytem",

Oh I agree with you completely. I've noted on other threads that I wrote my own Bible software (I'm not talented; just stubborn). I'd suspect maybe 95% of the associated databases are user-created (e.g. notes, images, spreadsheets, tables, html's, and on and on). Of course unlike Logos, I don't sell books to myself, so that's a factor. I recently got a touchpad, and that's opened a whole new avenue with hand-written diagrams mixed in with pictures, text, and so forth. It's great.

Maybe Bob's selling books or something.
