Problems downloading books onto iPad

For longer than a year I have had (and reported) a problem with the Logos 8 app on my iPad. When I purchase new volumes, they download fine on my desktop and laptop. I can open them etc. But on the iPad when I click to download, the app often simply freezes and then crashes. Or I can download one or two volumes and then nothing after that will download. I have reported this problem half a dozen times without response from Logos or resolution to the problem. It is not a problem of memory. Sometimes it will suddenly "cure itself" and I can download all not yet downloaded. I just purchased 28 new works. I've managed over several days now to download 3 onto the iPad. Anyone have a clue as to what the problem might be? or better how to fix it?

When I have that problem it tends to involve large resources and a lot of competition for bandwidth. Not sure if this will turn out to be your case or not. It was worse on my Mini 4 than my Air 3. I think it had to do with the power of the processor.

Out of curiosity: How many downloaded resources do you have? When was the last time you performed a "clean" install of the app?

Well, I know I have had that problem too. Especially with volumes such as the ESVSB.

If you mean me, it was, when I upgraded to my iPad Air 3. And once I upgraded, it only happened with large resources with a lot of competition wth others using the internet. And I'm over 8000 resources on it.

    Sorry, I meant the OP.

And I'm over 8000 resources on it.

FL used to discourage downloading of large amounts of one's library... but they have since "committed" to allowing it. However, over many years of use, I have found the quickest fix for many issues on mobile (not on desktop!) is to reinstall the app.

I have also found that (at least in the past) iOS doesn't always release space, which can be problematic when downloading large libraries. It has been a while, but on more than one occasion I needed to wipe my iPad and start with a clean slate. I do not know if that particular issue remains.

About 14,600. If I do a "clean install" it would take a long time to re-download all the books. I did it one time and don't know why I need to do it again. Pain in the posterior! There is plenty of memory left on the iPad and I'm on a high speed broad band connection. No problems nearly instantly downloading onto my Windows desktop.

Agreed, which is why I don't recommend downloading so many resources. There are also problems with resources remaining up to date on mobile... so having so many can be problematic. Faithlife used to not recommend downloading so many, but their stance has since changed. Mine has not.

I did it one time and don't know why I need to do it again.

I am not recommending that you do so, at least not at this point. If you come to the point where you want to try a skinny installation, a clean install might help.

Strictly diagnostic, download another FL app you don't need, then download your purchases. See if its the other app's installation.

    Hi David,

I am sorry to hear that you are having difficulty with this.

Please check which version of the iOS app you have installed.

Open the Logos app.  Please tap on the Menu icon (three horizontal lines in the lower right), tap on “Help:, then go to “App Info” > “Version”to confirm that the latest version, 8.12.6 has been installed.

If it has not been installed yet, please check the App Store for this update.

Please post again if you still experience this problem after confirming that you are up to date.

Completely up-to-date on the iOS (8.12.6 [0061]). Same old same  old. It will download 1 or 2 and then not...and then freeze....and then crash. Have to come back in a few hours and see if it will download two more or so. Frustrating. Been happening for over a year and a half. No longer sending reports to Logos about the problem since it has never changed a thing.

    Hi David,

You mention that you are no longer sending reports, but if it is not too much trouble for you, I would appreciate it if you could send us your logs.

    Please do the following:
    1. Open the app.
    2. Tap the Menu icon (has three horizontal lines).
    3. Tap Help.
    4. Press "Report a Problem"
    5. A pre-addressed email will open with a log file attached automatically. Press "Send" to send your report.

David, a workaround with has been successful for me is the following.

    1. make sure the volume(s) you want are tagged on your desk or laptop.

    2. Use the Faithlife Study Bible app and see if the volumes appears there. If so, download them in that app.

    3. Be sure to use the “sync your data” function in the Bible Study app after downloading.

    4. Now go back to the Logos app and “sync your data.” The new volumes should appear in your app library now and you will be able to download them into the Logos app.

Note, it make take an hour or so between step 3 and 4 for the books to appear. But so far, it has worked for me. You can always go back to the Faithlife app and remove them there after if you don't want 2 copies on the tablet.

Hope it works for you as it has for me.
