Tip 15a: Factbook Biblical Person: Events

Yes, in considering the Factbook sections, Media will be considered last. First, it introduces both a new search type and a new tool. Second, there are questions as to how it works that I have not yet sorted out.

The Events section includes:

1. A list of the first five Biblical Events that include Abraham as a participant together with the Bible passage narrating the event.
2. Often there is a “More” for expanding the Biblical Events list.
3. A command for open the Biblical Event Navigator, the primary Biblical event tool in Verbum.

Actions embedded in the events list:

• Mouse over the event name displays an information card
  
• Right-click on the event name opens the context menu. Of particular interest is the option to initiate a search on all resources or everything (1) to open Factbook to the event (2), or to do a look up on the event.
  
• A click on the event name opens Factbook to the event Entry (1). Remember that the prior-next navigation arrows (2) on the panel action bar allows one to easily return to the original factbook entry.
  
• Mouse over on the scripture reference gives a preview of the passage in one’s highest priority Bible that contains the passage.
  
• A right-click on the scripture reference opens a context menu with many potential selections of tagging on the left side. When “Selection” is chosen, a search option (1) and a look up option (2) are of note.
  
• A click on the scripture reference to open the top priority Bible containing the passage to the reference. The normal red moving circle draws your attention to the right location.

In examining the searches that can be initiated from the context menus, the screen shots will show only the “All resources” option. For the event name, “Selection” chosen on the left:

1. Search: The text term is placed in quotation marks to search for the phrase. The parameters of the panel menu are simply the last used – in this case, “Match all word forms” being on, the others being off. The Search is built as a Basic Search of All Text in All Resources.
   
2. Factbook here is a left side option indicating that the title is linked to Factbook – something we have already seen by clicking on the event name and having Factbook open to that event.
3. Lookup opens the highest priority “dictionary” that contains the selection “patriarchal period” as a headword (word being defined).
   

For the scripture reference, “Selection” chosen on the left:

1. Search The text term is placed in quotation marks to search for the phrase. The parameters of the panel menu are simply the last used – in this case, “Match all word forms” being on, the others being off. The Search is built as a Basic Search of All Text in All Resources. As one would expect, this will result in few, if any, results.
   
   
   However, if one selects the Bible reference on the left, the search argument becomes <Bible = Gen 11:31–50:26>. This datatype term looks for references to the passage – an exact match to the full passage reference being indicated by the = operator.
2. Look up would normally identify dictionary references. In this case the term to define is "Gen 11:31–50:26". The application found no definition, so it defaults to an Everything search. Note this reports matches in the Factbook section giving the user a starting point for research on the “unknown” term.
   

How is this an improvement over the Bible search on <Person Abraham>?

• The passage has a descriptive name which allows one to scan for topics.
• When an entry is a bit puzzling as in the Abraham event in Luke, the information card provides not only a brief description but also an information card including a participants section:
