Logos Dictionary

Hi, I was wondering if it would be possible to use the apple lookup feature with three-finger-click or ctrl-cmd-d shortcut inside logos 8? The dictionary tends to be better, faster and cleaner than the information panel dictionary. Is this something you guys can incorporate in an update or something? I am a macbook user and this would be extremely helpful for me.

Otherwise, it seems like Logos is not defining all english words through the dictionary it carries. Like the word "subjected", it takes me to a bible concordance and not my webster or oxford dictionary. This is a probably more of an issue with not tagging to the word "subject" which my logos dictionaries carry but this is not the only word it does this too. It happens to many english words and it can get a tad bit frustrating. As a software that takes pride in language and words, defining any english word should work flawlessly. In the same way that you guys worked so hard for us to define every greek or hebrew word, please make it just as seamless for the english word.

Another possible option would be to integrate google search in the program like you do with wikipedia. But that could just complicate things. Logos needs to make the english dictionary a lot better by updating to web based versions of the webster and oxford dictionaries or something. PLEASE!

But on a bright side, I am so thankful to God for this program. Thank you all for working so hard on making this program better and better every year. I can't wait till Logos 9 comes out in a month or so. hahahaha. Peace and Grace!

This is because the concordance is Prioritized ahead of your dictionaries - see Prioritizing resources for this. If neither are listed, it will be because of Logos' default prioritization - just add the dictionaries to your list. The usual preference with bible products is to prioritize bible dictionaries and bible concordances ahead of normal language dictionaries in case the word is not a 'bible' word.

If you right click a word and choose "Selection" in the menu (left side), you will see a list of possible resources on the other side, under Look up.

Search {Headword subjected} finds all resources in your library for Headword Lookup. Right Click shows Top Five in prioritized order.

I am old enough to remember a promise to provide a programme 'built for the Mac from the ground up'. It never materialised.

The three finger look up, as it seems to work for almost every other programme that I use should not be hard to incorporate but I never has been. I to find it frustrating.

Hi Dave and keep smiling, thx for responding. Yeah I forgot to mention that I tried the prioritizing thing as well. I put all my dictionaries at the top. And it still doesn't work. To confirm, I actually opened up both of my dictionaries and typed in the word "subjected" and it still doesn't recognize it because the word was never put in the dictionary. It has subjugated but not subjected. But if you go to the online dictionaries for webster and oxford concise, they have it in those. Hence, the dictionaries themselves are outdated and need to be constantly updated by the web one. I hat eto make a big deal about it and don't mind going to be chrome browser and typing it in, but I just found it as such a primitive task that I thought logos would have that down seamlessly. I spent many thousands in this software and it can't do a simple task that is seamless in cheaper book reader apps. That is all. But I do have to surrender this irritation. It's from the flesh. So may I surrender it now to Jesus. Thx again!

because the word was never put in the dictionary

Rule of thumb: Dictionaries are ordered by lemma. Derivative forms like subjects, subjected, subjecting are rarely included and depend upon some stemming routine. The exception is when the derivative forms are irregular.

Hey Mj, thanks for the reply. Yeah I quickly found that out. But as I mentioned, I tested it out on the web based webster dictionary and they already made the connection with subjected. So maybe it will be useful to connect the respective english dictionaries to be updated or draw from their web database. But that may be too hard maybe. By the way, you can test it yourself. Open in Logos either the webster or concise oxford and type in subjected. It wont do anything. But go to either one of their websites and type in subjected, it will take you to the word subject and when you scroll down, you will find the word subjected under verb form of Subject. My whole aim is to have a seamless experience from word to definition and not having to figure out the lemma and then go to the dictionary myself and open it up and then type in the word subject. That to me is not seamless.

On that note, I don't own collins but it seems like that is something Logos does with the collins dictionary. In the description of the product, it says: "All definitions, examples, idioms and usage notes are based on the Collins Word Web—an unrivalled and constantly updated 2.5 billion-word database of today's English." Can someone confirm that this product does in fact draw from the online database before I buy it? I would hate to have a third dictionary that is outdated like the first two. The reason I need a confirmation is because in the comments sections, someone does in fact say that this dictionary is outdated. hahahahaha.....
