OK Stupid Question I'm Sure

Since I'm new to this Logos 8 software (oh dear Lord help me when 9 comes out), I'm confused when I clickon the Layout button why I see all these "snapshots" Once I name a layout wouldn't changes just stay in the named layout? I'll click on snapshot and it's the same as what I'm working on in my named layout. YES, I click on the update.

The snapshots can be ignored if you like... it is just a moment of time.

Not necessarily. You have to save it.

Case Study: Lets say that I teach a Sunday school class. When I am preparing for the lesson, I always want to have five resources (i.e. two bibles, an atlas, curriculum book, and study bible). I can create a layout and every time I BEGIN to study, I can open the layout with just those resources. Everything else is closed and put away.

If the lesson takes me to Psalms, The Gospel of John and Genesis, I may open up commentaries on those books. I may use some bible dictionaries to look up certain words. When NEXT week comes (or next module, or whatever), I may not want any of those books open, just my starting five. In that case, simply open up the saved layout and all the other resources disappear again and you have a blank slate once more.

If you ALWAYS want to start up where you left off, then it is best to change your settings to "last used layout" ("local" or "any," depending upon your preference and circumstances).

Not stupid, and a difficult issue that Logos struggled with:

- Some people want a fixed layout, which during Bible study, might change a lot (temporarily). They don't want their named layout also changed.

- Other people see the named layout as an evolving Bible study. They do want it to change.

The middle course was to take periodic snapshots (that a user could return to, if a mistake, etc.). And the user having to 'save' changes to a named layout (as study proceeded). And a startup, the user could choose 'which'.

In my case (example), I have a fixed layout (no changes), and a button at the top to save changes (now and then).

Hi Phyllis,

Welcome to Logos. The software will take a snapshot everytime you change layouts and save the layout when the application is closed. If you have a saved layout, but do not save it when you close the application, you can go back to that layout by selecting either the snapshot or application closed. I used to think of these as clutter until I really needed to go back to a previous layout. You can click on the x to delete them if you want. The better way is to save your layouts before you close the application or change to another layout, but if you forget Logos has you covered.

While there may be some new features it is unlikely that the way things work will change drastically, most folks seem to make the transition between versions quite smoothly.

As far as I recall every time you close the programme, change layouts, or revert to the home page Logos takes a snapshot of your screen layout in case you want to revert to that layout at some point in the near future. The giveaway is the date and time that appears beside the snapshot.

I am not quite sure what you are getting at her Phyllis.

If you save as named layout that layout becomes available in the left-hand column of the layouts window.

If you have made changes to the layout since the last snapshot you can revert to the snapshot by clicking on 'Update Active"

Ok so I can make the snapshot my worksheet and keep my Named Layout my template. Is that correct. We're probably in semantics here but I'm old and old school. Thank for the help.

Correct. If is already saved then just click update active. You can drag the update active to your toolbar and have an icon so you can just click on it to update your active layout. It is the down arrow on my toolbar.

In Windows 10 I do not seem to be able to drag Update active to my tool bar.

Any help would be appreciated.
