Tip 38: Factbook Biblical Person: Library Results

Please be generous with your additional details, corrections, suggestions, and other feedback. This is being built in a .docx file for a PBB which will be shared periodically.

From Verbum Help:

  • Library Results — A search of the Library resources for the entity.[1]

By “entity” think “Biblical entity” as in the data types associated with the Biblical entities as encoded in:

  • DB:BIBLICAL-EVENTS: BiblicalEvents.lbsevt
  • DB:BIBLICAL-PEOPLE-DIAGRAMS: BiblicalPeople.lbsbpd
  • DB:BIBLICAL-PLACES: BiblicalPlaces.lbsplc
  • DB:BIBLICAL-THINGS: BiblicalThings.lbsthg
  • DB:BIBLICAL-REFERENTS: BiblicalReferences.lbsbrd (for mapping to indirect references)

In other words, this section provides results based on <Person Abraham> in my library. Your results will be different reflecting your library and priorities.

Section heading:

  • Expand/contract arrowhead
  • Title “Library Results”

Statistics line

  • Number of results
  • In number of selected articles
  • In number of selected resources
  • Time taken to build results
  • Selected view of data:
    • By article
    • Ranked
    • By resource
    • By count

Note that resources not on the device are not considered nor are resources that are not tagged for Biblical entities. Depending on your library the omitted resources may be a significant portion of your library.

Subheading which is dependent upon the selected view:

  • Resource only – thumb print of cover; mouse over shows standard preview
  • Resource title or article / resource title; mouse over shows standard preview
  • Resource only -- Number of results in number of articles

Detail lines with standard mouse over and click behavior:

  • Article title (chapter for Bible) with reference
  • Except by article, number of occurrences in that article
  • Preview with matches highlighted
  • Resource only -- when needed, a closing line with a search for complete results from that resource

Final line:

  • A “more” option
  • A search against all resources for the Biblical person

Note that this example is in count sequence i.e. the resources are listed by the number of results in the resource from high to low.

Also note the resources most certain to be tagged are Bibles, Encyclopedias, certain media such as Biblical People Diagrams, Biblical Places Maps … but monographs, even studies on the specific Biblical person, are likely not tagged. See below for a work around.

This is the same data but in By Resource sequence. This is in strict alphabetical sort sequence.

This is the same data but in Articles sequence

The same data in Ranked format. Ranking is a text analysis technique to identify when the text is likely speaking on the subject rather than mentioning it in passing. This is done through a formula that compares frequency with which a term(s) is used to the expected frequency of the term(s). See tf-idf for a more complete description.

Execute the Search

Clicking on the Search option at the bottom of the Library Results section generates a Basic search against all resources for <Person ~ Abraham>.

The results of the Search and the results in the Library Results do not match:

Library Results

Search Results

Results

45,333

45,156

In articles

4,930

4,858

In resources

138

116

Two cases in which a resource appears in the Library Results section but not in the search result appear early in the list o selected resources:

It appears that the discrepancy is related to graphics in resources. I have yet to construct a media search that correctly selects the additional entries. I have put a post in the forums requesting help.

Use of Community tagging

This resource Grigoni, Michael R., Miles Custis, Douglas Mangum, and Matthew M. Whitehead. 2012. Abraham: Following God’s Promise. Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press does not appear in Library Results or in the executed Search.

Step 1:

  • Open the resource.
  • Select an occurrence of Abram/Abraham that you wish were tagged.
  • Right click to open Context Menu
  • Select “Selection” on the left.
  • Select “Add community tag” on the right.

What? You don’t see “Add community tag?” Use the Visual Filters icon and turn on Community tags:

Step 2:

  • Enter the entity name in the community tag
  • Select entry from drop-down select list
  • Hit enter

Step 3:

  • Note that the person entity for Abraham now appears in the Context Menu. It provides links to Factbook and several Lookup options.
  • Note that on mouse over, Abraham now has an information record popup.

    MJ,

Thank you for these tips.  I am way behind but am working through each one.  They are helping me very much.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

Do you have "Match equivalent references" turned on in your Search panel?

Thanks for the suggestion, Andrew, but no, only "match all word forms" is on. I had forgotten to double check.
