question: how Logos decides whether to re-use an existing tab or to open a new one.

Hello All,

I have a question about how Logos decides whether to re-use an existing tab or to open a new one.

I'm using desktop version on a mac. Typically I have 2 side-by-side panes. In this case my preferred bible is opened on the left and a dictionary is open on the right.

Sometimes when I click a verse reference, it will use the existing tab and jump to that reference. Other times when I click a reference it will open a new tab on the right side (on top of my dictionary). I have also had the experience of Logos deciding to split one of my panels and putting a new tab in that area.

How can I learn to predict, or even better control the way Logos makes these decisions?

I've been thinking about your question and some of the things you mention seem very strange!

In my experience, when I click a verse reference the default action Logos tries to take is to navigate to that verse in my preferred Bible. If a copy of that preferred Bible is open it will use that, if it is not open it will open one. Typically, it will open a new Bible tab in the panel other than the one you are clicking in.

To force hyperlinks to go to a particular open Bible, you can set it to Send Hyperlinks here

or even better control the way Logos makes these decisions?

If instead of clicking a reference, you can drag it to the place on your layout to where you want Logos to open it

If this happens again, please capture the logs and report it as a bug. I have never seen this happen and from the description of the routine that determines where a panel should open, it seems very odd. However, I can think of some situations where it could appear to happen.

The new tab that’s created, is it a duplicate of the tab you were working in previously? If so, I’ve experienced this problem for several years on my Mac. However, I’ve never been able to capture a screen share of it, so I haven’t reported it yet.

OK, I’m going to work over the next couple of days and see if I can grab a screen share of the problem and report it. I’m more motivated now that I know that someone else is having the issue as well.

I have this exact same problem, except I'm using Logos 8 on Windows. Often it will open my top prioritized Bible (ESV) even if I have "Send Hyperlinks Here" selected on a different open version. If not, sometimes it will open another copy of the ESV in one of the positions Brent has described.

It happens frequently but inconsistently. I hadn't tried to report it because I thought it was just a quirk with my system or layout, but if someone else has it too maybe not. I'll try to capture a log next time it happens.

But most of the time, it does. It's a great feature, actually. If, for example, I have an original language Bible open and want to work with that instead, it's a very convenient way to jump around in it. It's only occasionally that Logos feels the need to open a new instance of the ESV--and that sometimes, too, with an instance of it already open.

Ah, I read your post too narrowly. I thought you were speaking only of external links. My apologies.

I think I finally figured out what causes this. Hopefully I can explain clearly enough.

-Clicking on the link should send it to the Bible that is open, or open your top Bible to it (if not already open), or to the Bible you have marked "Send hyperlinks here"--the expected behavior.

-However, if you click, hold, and drag, even if so slightly that you don't notice, it will open a new instance of the your top Bible in (I think) the direction you drag it, as in this shot:

Resulting in an extra copy of the Bible being opened:

At least this is what I think is happening. I have not been able to reproduce it otherwise, though I will continue to try. But if this is the cause, it clears up a long standing mystery for me.

I used to notice this bug just rarely, but since 9.1.0.0018, I see it much more often. And it isn't from slightly dragging (as the last reply suggested). See this screen cast. Clicking the hyperlinks now opens the new instance of the resource more than it changes the verse in the existing resource.

Can FL review and confirm that/if this is a bug?

I'm running Mac 11.1, but I've had this issue through several Mac releases over the last few years.
