I'm fairly new to Dark Mode on devices. I'd love to hear how different people use it.
Do you leave it on all the time? If not, when do you use it?
I leave it on all the time both on desktop and mobile. The screen's just too bright, otherwise.
I use it only when bright light is hard on the eyes. I hope in the future it will not be necessary to restart Logos to switch to dark mode.
This might be a dumb question, but has there been a proper dark mode added to mobile yet? I know there‘s a “black” theme you can manually select under view settings, but is there a way to have that automatically turn on and off at certain times like a true dark mode?
Are the only two options regular and dark mode? It would be great if they offered an option like iOS that changes at sunrise/sundown
Use f.lux for that.
If you're on macOS, that functionality is also available to switch light/dark mode based on sunrise/sunset. That's how I have my MacBook Pro setup.

I've added this suggestion here: https://feedback.faithlife.com/boards/logos-desktop-app/posts/759
Please vote for it if it's important to you.

Set your View Settings to "System" (not "White" or "Black") and it will automatically follow your device.
I kind of like dark mode on the GUI but not for reading the text which is just lovely as I have set up for so long. I haven't investigated into making the text different in dark mode. That might not be doable. I have been using an off white and larger print which really has been terrific for my older eyes. It has spoiled me against many print books.
Done!

Yes.

Bradley, if we have it set to system, will it switch between light and dark without restarting?
I think it does for Mobile (but not completely sure).
Desktop always requires a restart and doesn't change automatically. (Being able to switch themes without restarting would be a prerequisite for following the system colour scheme.)

If the Desktop app always requires a restart of the app, why then have the option for it to follow the system?
It doesn't say Follow... [:)]
It will adopt the current theme when you start the application. And it's always correct for Windows 10 users, whose systems don't automatically switch themes at sunset. [:D]
I got it. I don't quit out of Logos all that often, so that's why I was asking. I'm just going to keep it in dark mode.

I don't know about Mac, but on Windows 10 you don't need F.Lux anymore. Just use the Nightlight schedule feature.
macOS can also automatically change between light and dark modes:

Thats debatable. :-P

Depending on your OS and software installed, you can configure at OS level to auto-warm the screen after sunset. This makes your screen warmer and research shows that it helps eases the eyes and have less sleep problems.
Then in OS level, at least in macOS Catalina, you can configure the dark mode to follow this schedule. i.e. in daytime it is not warm, and in "Light mode", after sunset, it is warm, and in "Dark mode".
Whether Dark mode reason helps the eye, I don't know (please add Scientific info if anyone knows.) But it seems that the uprising of the "Dark mode" is from the releases of iPhone X, which has an OLED monitor. While OLED monitor is not new technology, as everything from Apple, it is the first time it reached such a mass scale deployment. Then, people circulate that using inverted color where white becomes dark, hence most of the pixel is dark, and in OLED technology means that these pixels don't emit light at all (so called true dark), and hence save battery life. Now everyone want to have Dark mode on their iPhone X. Then, iOS has official Dark mode, then later on macOS, and many apps follow it to have a mode matching the OS level setting.
I personally found that Dark mode or Light mode doesn't quite matter. What matters is the contrast—the ratio from total brightness to total dark. The easiest way to achieve that without distorting your displayed images is by lowering the Brightness (some monitor might have different terminology) setting. e.g. in Photography, when calibrating monitors to match for print, often people target something like a luminance of 120 cd/m2. e.g. My monitors at 100% brightness are much brighter than this target.
So in short, turn down your monitor brightness, turn on auto-warm/"Night Shift", try both Light mode and Dark mode and see which one your eyes like, or just synchronize it with auto-warm. Also, Logos has a program setting that can set the background color to be gray. That lower the contrast and hence will help your eye too.

Correct. F.Lux is a lot more robust in its settings and customization than the nightlight feature so I still use F.Lux. Windows Nightlight is pretty much just do you want it on or off. lol
Thanks for your thoughts Kolen. I agree with your comments about contrast. I've used different backgrounds from Logos to reduce the brightness.
It would be nice if there were more options with the different backgrounds to reduce brightness.
On Kolen's remarks, turning down the monitor brightness does help, but still hurts my eyes more than night mode. I do not know what is all involved in night mode, but it seems that in addition to changing background color (there should be more options), it should also be possible to change color of the menus.
Just to be clear turning down brightness and using dark mode are independent, and the former should be done regardless. Dark mode with high brightness means the words are bright on dark background. That would leaves a visible pattern for some time to my eyes after a short exposure to it. (Do you remember those websites from the 90s?
Phil mentioned in another thread that there is going to be more work done on Dark Mode in future updates so this is still in progress.
Yes, I saw that. I am glad for this start. Already it is helping me in the evenings
