Retaining Word Format in Personal Books

I would like to retain my Word doc format (bible text on the left, notes on the right) when I add files to Personal Books.  Currently, columns and tables will not convert.  Any suggestions on how to retain my current format when files are added to Personal Books? 

See below for an example of my format.  I called support.  Dead end.

    I have had no problems using tables - they convert without a problem. It's been years since I tried with columns ... I suspect that is the culprit.
