General Impressions through B3
Hi Bob,
I'm enjoying playing with the new software & am attempting to use L4 as I go about the normal week's business. However, I keep finding myself going back to L3, thus this note.
IMO, the biggest competitor to version 4 is going to be version 3. Changing the question a bit, what will it take to keep us in version 4? What will it take to get us to uninstall version 3? Others will have their own lists... But, other than bug fixes, here's my list so far...
- Smart tags for the word processor & CBV in the system tray. I've automated so much of the preparation of my weekly sermon research Word document and, later, the sermon manuscript (also in Word), that it's hard to do without these 2 foundational tools that integrate with my word processor. Since Word's internal format has been stable (or at least forward compatible) since before Logos 1.6, it's where all my research is. To expect me to stay within Logos' internal file formats is unreasonable, absent a similar commitment to forward compatibility.
- An option to load my preferred workspace at startup. I have nothing against the home page. I just don't intend to use it. Forcing me to go through the home page to be able to start work ends up as a delay.
As you can see, it isn't a big list.
I also want to say that there's a lot of promise in v4. Thanks for allowing me to be part of the beta test.

Hey bill,
I don't know a lot about smart-tags but the copy bible versions thing is easily accomplished. Put a shortcut on the tool bar...One click and the box is up...the same amount of steps as in V3.
Also the workspace thing can be done but with slightly more work; you set it to NOT load the homepage and put your favorite "layout" in a short cut on the tool bar...one click and it's there..granted; not a "no click" situation like in V3 but it's close.

The loss of smart tags would be very substantial for me as well. I wrote a Word macro that goes though a bunch of Our Daily Bread files (a month work) and prepares them to be made into audio files for a blind lady in our congregation. The macro takes the smart tagged Bible reference and adds the text. With being able to do this with a macro it takes about 4 minutes to convert 1 month of devos. If i had to manually change them it would be difficult.
The good thing is I will be able to keep 3.0 on my puter along side 4.0, which means I won't have to give them up. The bad news is this means Logos wouldn't be in a rush to upgrade the smart tags.

Hi Robert,
Thanks for your response, but it isn't the same... And it isn't the same number of clicks as v3. I already have one-click access to my preferred layout. And I will do the same for CBV (thanks for the suggestion). The point I was trying to make is that all my real work is in Word. It's the integration with Word that keeps me going back to L3, because it's just easier. I have way more than 2 windows open. More often, I'll have email open (Outlook), and sometimes a calendar (Outlook in a separate window), browser, another Bible software program, possibly some photo viewing and/or editing software, & occasionally an html editor. Just finding the right window in which to click on CBV is sometimes a challenge.
Or are you saying I can put a CBV button in the tool bar of Word? Otherwise, I'd still have to alt-tab back into Logos to initiate CBV, even if it's one-click when I find the right window. No matter how easy it is in Logos, it just isn't integrated with the rest of the system. With CBV in the system tray, I just mouse down to he bottom of the screen, the tool bar auto-unhides, & I click... Whether or not it's really integrated, it feels like it is.
And despite all the words about CBV, my real itch is for Smart Tags. I never have to leave Word, then. I've gotten in the habit of using CBV for quick lookup, not just copying.
Thanks again for the response!
Bill

Bill,
This is exactly the issue I was raising in a very different way in this post ....http://community.logos.com/forums/t/1943.aspx.I fully agree that we now have two different Bible software programs vying for our use ... L3 and L4.
By thew way I looked at a few of the competitors on the internet and L3 and L4 are still way ahead of any other competitor ..IMO.
If I am going to move from L3 to L4 I have to weigh up what I am gaining and what I am losing.

I can't get that link to load.
See my post in General / Is L4 a new Bible software program?

I don't know, but I love the new copy utility in the V4. It is working well and does exactly what I need. My be my work is different. I usually send chosen verses to the MSWord as I study and only at the end I go to the Word document to finish it, put verses where I need them etc.

bill,
I understand now; you want to have "Word" maximized and be able to click the copy bible verse toolbar icon at the bottom...
No...you don't get that.
I, however work in reverse; I use Open office as my word processor and I use "deskpins" to keep Openoffice inside Logos and I can directly cut and paste or go through CBV also.

that way the open office document seems to be just another Logos window.
