OT: VmWare Fusion + Windows 7 + Logos

Hi Gang,

Just curious if anyone has played with Fusion, Windows 7 and Logos? I am guessing that until the Mac version has a bit more features, I am going to have to continue to run Fusion. If that's the case, I may need to look at retiring my copy of XP Pro for Windows 7. Has anyone tried this? What has performance been like and has there been any bugs? (yet?)

I also would be interested in the answer, but why move from XP? I only use Fusion for Logos and Turbo Tax for Corporations. Unless Intuit does something crazy, I see no need to leave XP. Hopefully, I can stay there until Logos Mac reaches parity with Logos Windows.

I am exploring in case I need to keep Windows on my Mac longer than I currently anticipate. Because XP is so old, I expect that if Windows 7 (W7) is a decent OS, then support for XP will drop off rapidly. We don't know when Logos 4.0 for Windows will be released, but let's say its a year from now, it is quite possible that it will be beneficial to upgrade to W7 if the Mac version is continuing to lag so far behind.

Of course this is a big IF. I assume that W7 is going to be better than Vista due to the positive reception on the BETA and RC versions which are currently out... that said, things looked real rosey according to many in the days running up to Vista coming out. Additionally, I live in a world with Windows users, so understanding on how W7 works will be beneficial for helping my parents and parents in law who are still Windows based.

I have just recently installed VmWare Fusion, XP and Logos to run on my white MacBook. I chose to do this primarily because of the numerous missed features in the Mac version of Logos. So far I have had NO problem using Logos this way. In fact it works rather well. Before I landed at VmWare Fusion I actually tried Virtualbox by Sun since it was free and it worked well except for usb support. I never did get that working right. I then tried Parallels 4.0 desktop for Mac and that turned out to be a nightmare for me so I scrapped it. I then installed a trial version of VmWare Fusion and found that at least for me it worked the best. Excellent usb support, easy install and all my windows stuff works as if it was native on a windows box. I have found not bugs yet.

Yes, I am very happy with Fusion. The only thing I have found is that global searches on all my resources is really slow compared to other installations that I have, or even the Mac version. I can live with this, but it is a big sluggish at times. I have a 2.8ghz, unibody macbook pro with 4gb ram. There may be a way to tweak fusion so that Logos searches are faster, but I haven't discovered the settings yet.

I haven't had any trouble running Logos in Win 7 in Fusion. I've played with Win 7 installed via boot camp and via a virtual disk. No performance issues noted, everything I do pretty much runs as expected.

Note that currently if you install Win 7 via Boot Camp and access it through Fusion you might have a networking issue, but the issue can be fixed pretty easily.

I have used VMWare and VirtualBOX under Ubuntu for the past 18 months. I found I preferred VirtualBox, mostly because there was pretty seemless cutting and pasting between client OS apps and host OS apps. I don't have any input on the Mac OS implementation but based on my experience under Ubuntu I would look at it pretty well..

Until about a year ago I was running Logos on a Win2K image with very little problem. Support didn't matter since I was running stable apps and the host OS handled the firewall related security. I upgraded those images to XP so I could put IE7 on as required by one of the Logos updates. Searches are at least as fast under the VBox image as they are under a native boot of XP.

I wouldn't put the money out unless my applications required it and I almost always got burned being an early adopter of MS operating systems. Since WindowsNT I have waited until at least the first service pack was released.

Oh yeah... I know this one well. My wife's last computer died, so I had to splurge on a new one which only came with Vista, pre service pack one. It was so decrepid that when service pack one came out, it couldn't install it without crashing. I had to format, do a clean install and then I was able to get SP1 loaded. After this, it has been tolerable, but still has troubles. She finally got irate and told me to buy her an Apple Mac. The rest is history...

How do you fix it? I'll be running this exact setup with Win 7, so I want to make sure everything works.

Also, will I be able to install the Win 7 upgrade onto Boot Camp and access it in Fusion if I already have Vista? I bought a copy in the Preorder and I just want to make sure it works instead of having to spend full price for the OS again since I've already got a full Vista license.

I imagine, though, that when Win 7 is officially released there will also be a VMWare update and things will work fine.

You should be able to access the upgrade without any problem. An upgrade version is a full version of the software it just has to be able to "see" the old version for verification before it will install. In the case of Vista, you couldn't do a clean install from the upgrade CD, I'm hoping that's not the case with Windows 7. Either way, no problem for Boot Camp or Fusion. Just remember to install the Boot Camp tools and the VMWare tools on Windows 7 once it's installed.

Libronix v4 for Windows will run on .NET Framework 3.x which is pre-installed on Vista and Windows 7, but can be downloaded for Windows XP (about 240 MB). Also, MS will maintain Critical security fixes via Windows Update for all editions of XP until 2014. So there is no need to junk XP.

This thread is a bit old and now I am running Fusion 3.0, which is noticeably faster. (you have to create a new virtual machine with 3.0 to see this, as opposed to reading an old machine created with Fusion 2.0). I am running XP with Service Pack 3. I think SP3 is required because of the update to NET. With 2GB of Ram allocated and graphics accleration turned off, XP is running Logos 4 with no problems. In fact, it is fast enough that I forget that I am running a virtual machine!

I don't have this to compare against Vista or Windows 7. Anecdotally, I would be very, very surprised if Vista was faster than my XP install because of the speed issues we have had at our house running it in native sessions on my wife's old computer. I don't know about W7 because I haven't obtained a copy of it. I would rather that Logos for Mac just get seriously good so that I could ditch running Windows all together!
