Verbum 9 Tip 4: Bible Browser data emphasizing Biblical person
We will jump from the simplest of searching and tagging, text argument and person datatype, to the most complex of Verbum searches. This is necessary to teach what data is available thanks to Faithlife tagging. In general, each cluster of data will be discussed with regards to:
- Documentation
- Bible browser
- Interactive
- Context Menu
- Search
For some clusters, additional topics may appear:
- Visual filter
- Factbook
- Verbum tools
What we have bypassed are (1) the original language tools that are the backbone of the application and (2) the Guides and Workflows that organize the available data and walk us through using it.
Available Bibles and their canons
The Bible Browser works on Faithlife servers. It has it’s own source of data. It requires an internet connection. To be included in the Bible Browser, the Bible must have a reverse interlinear.
In the chart below, LXX is used to represent a variety of canons all derived from the LXX. For Anglicans, Lutherans, Catholics, Greek Orthodox, and Slavic Orthodox the list of books varies slightly. The Masoretic and short Protestant canons are more set.

LXX selection |
The contents of Common Divisions are dependent upon the translation e.g. 1 Maccabees may be included in Histories or may be relegated the Apocrypha. Common divisions permit one to define a range to search that is more than one book but less than the entire canon. Note that in the Bible Search user-defined custom ranges are possible.

I need to verify this data based on this response from Bradley Grainger:
[quote]Bible Browser shows the same "Common Divisions" as Bible Search. These come from the same source: the primary data type for the Bible, and the divisions it supports. While both probably could be enhanced with additional "common divisions", it's currently "working as designed".[1]
It is worth your time to ensure that you know what each of these divisions is. Please ask if any definitions are needed and also let me know of other subdivisions that you find useful.
Facet: Bible books
Documentation
None
Bible Browser data: common divisions in which the book falls, author, recipient
- Open Bible Browser
- Set translation; I used NRSV
- Expand Bible books (1)
- Expand Old Testament (2)
- Select Jeremiah (3)
- The crumb trail shows the Old Testament: Jeremiah selection (4)
- Common Divisions still has three selectable values – Latter Prophets, Major Prophets, Nevi’im – which says these values apply to the Book of Jeremiah. (5)
- Author shows only Jeremiah (prophet) as the author. (6)
- Recipient shows two designations for the same group: Addressees of Jeremiah, People of Jerusalem addressed by Jeremiah (7).
- Note the consistent count of 1,364 verses after each item. We can infer that the Book of Jeremiah in the NRSV translation contains 1,364 verses. If I switch to the LES, only 1,296 verses are counted.
Interactive
There is no interactive specifically tied to this facet. However, the new Bible Books Explorer. 2020. Bellingham, WA: Faithlife contains some overlapping materials.
Context Menu
The Context menu is not designed for units as large as an entire Biblical books.
Search
There is no Search that is specific to the Bible Browser data specific to the Bible book. There is also no Search specific to the Bible Books Explorer. The closest is the Search that is available on the Factbook data:
From Verbum Help:
[quote]Bible Books Supplemental Dataset
The Bible Books Supplemental Dataset delivers several labels. These labels are applied to books throughout the library, and are used to populate the Bible Book Guides section in the Factbook.
• Additional Information — Populates the See Also section.
• Background — Situation, social & historical context of the book.
• Canon — Canonicity (reception throughout church history), historicity, and authenticity of the book.
• Content — Is high-level discussions of the material in the book.
• Form — Is unity, composition, style, and structure of the book.
• Meaning — Is theme, emphasis, interpretation, theology, and message of the book.
• Objects — Is geography and key figures.
• Origin — Is authorship, date, and purpose.
These labels all support two properties:
• Reference ~ <Bible ...> — Bible data type reference specifying the Bible book under discussion.
• Subcategory ~ <BookGuideComment ...> — Is the Bible Book category and sub-category that the text belongs to.
For example:
• {Label Origin WHERE Reference ~ <Bible Deuteronomy>}
• {Label Meaning WHERE Reference ~ <Bible Php>}[2]
