Facet: (Biblical) Places

The discussion of Biblical Places is always best held with a copy of Zev Vilnay’s three volume The Sacred Land by your side.

  1. Legends of Jerusalem
  2. Legends of Judea and Samaria: Bethlehem, Hebron, Jericho, Dead Sea, Jaffa, Tel Aviv, Beersheba, Shechem, Sharon, Caesarea
  3. Legends of Galilee, Jordan, and Sinai

Why? Because the connotation of a place is based on the stories one knows of that place.

Documentation

none

Bible Browser

Biblical Place works in the Bible Browser just as Biblical Person works in the Bible Browser, or, in fact, any other simple datatype/Biblical entity.

In the example, selecting People: Abraham à Place: Ur (City) yields 3 pericopes. Note the highlighting in two shades – orange for Abraham and blue for Ur.

“Any” region/place/city … is used for unnamed locations.

Places Abraham Went is easily misunderstood; it covers unspecified places where Abraham went. It is not a list of all places Abraham went.

Interactive

There is no interactive dedicated to Biblical Place although there is the Atlas tool. However, place does figure into some of the interactives:

  • Before and After: Biblical Sites is a visualization tool related to place
  • Bible Book Explorer
    • Key Places
  • Biblical Event Navigator

Context Menu and Information Panel
In the Information Panel, the behavior of Place parallels that of Person.

Similarly, the comments on the context menu for Biblical person also apply to Biblical place.

Visual Filter and Factbook
Biblical place is one facet that appears in the Factbook visual filter and therefore requires no user created highlighting palette or visual filter. The visual filter powers the popup on mouse over.

The visual filter powers the Factbook entry on click.

Search
Running the Bible search from the Context Menu yields:

This is a standard Bible entity datatype search.

Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."
