Origin of Satan

Am looking at the origin of Satan and his Fall for a Background to teaching Satan and evil. I have done a Fact book search, which presented me with Dictionaries, OT and Pseudepigrapha, Lends of the Jews, NT Aprocrypha, DSS, Nag Hammadi stuff, & Apostolic Fathers. I am also reading Heiser's books.

Looking for any other good references.

Any help would be appreciated.

This search:

brings out all the resources in your library that have the word “Satan” in the heading and the word “origin” in the body text of the article during the next 90 words after that.

Or, if you replace the word “Satan” with the word “Devil” like this:

([field heading,largetext,surface] origin) AFTER 90 WORDS ([field heading,largetext] Devil)

or… changing the words to “angel(s)”, “fall” etc. whatever combinations:

… turns out some interesting results:

The searches turned out to me, for example:

An ISBE Dictionary article on the sons of God in OT or in the AYB Dictionary or in the TDNT.

An interesting book on Serpent symbolism. An interesting monograph on Jesus as an exorcist by Amanda Witmer. An interesting monograph on angels and celestial spirits by Susan R. Garrett (in AYBD library).

Some Old Testament Biblical Theologies articles on Satan: Horst Dietrich Preuss, Walter Eichrodt, the College Press Old Testament Introduction or Faithlife Study Bible.

An interesting resource on medieval iconography on the devil. Remember, before people read, they watched pictures!

Then Thomas Oden’s chapter on Satan his Systematic Theology on Satan.

Regarding renouncing Satan in the sacrament of holy baptism: St. John Chrysostom’s view (orthodox) or this one.

Roman-Catholic view (the Council of Trent). Some modern Roman-Catholic (post Vatican II) views on Satan. Or by Pope John Paul II.

Luther’s baptismal formula, in which the devil is renounced.

(This was just an experiment, and didn't take too long; haven't really read all of the above, since I'm occupied in another topics at the moment) I must admit Logos is a powerful engine!

This is a touchy subject, since doctrinal (origin) 'Satan' sort of morphs over time, so a discussable 'origin' has to switch names, etc as Heiser discussed.

Technically, you can find 'the adversary' in the Akkadian ... he's 'sworn by' as a court member, and if you break your agreement, he's the enforcer (Nanay and Marbiti). This 'angle' of course, plugs into 'covenant' that repeats in the OT.

The other approach you might consider, is what a Satan does, and Luke is an excellent discussion. The Logos resource 'Finger of God' (Woods) has a lengthy discussion of the evil pantheon (hinting at Baelzebub's origin).

The bibliographies in the academic dictionaries are great places to start! I find the IVP Black Dictionaries, the ISBE, and the ABD are always good resources with good bibliographies to help guide you toward further reading. The Dictionary of Deities and Demons in the Bible also has a good article with some more technical information. I also recently read Ryan E. Stokes' The Satan: How God's Executioner Became the Enemy, which goes into a lot of detail about how the intertestamental literature helps to shape the view of the satan/Satan from the OT to the NT.

A standard work which is not available in Logos is Peggy L. Day's An Adversary in Heavan: Śāṭān in the Hebrew Bible, which is sighted in pretty much every work on Satan since it's publication in 1988. It is super expensive to purchase in print, but you can get the PDF from Brill here for $30. I would purchase it again in Logos if they offered it.

While busy reading C. S. Lewis' Mere Christianity I came across this philosophical argument regarding dualism and the dependence of Evil on Good. In case you don't own it in Logos (the 30-part Lewis-package is expensive!), here's a screenshot, also:

In my understanding, this goes all the way back to St. Augustine: evil is just a negation - or an illusion (correct me if I'm wrong)?
