Data
Reported Speech is the first of three speech-oriented Bible Browser facets:
- Reported speech which identifies speakers and addressees
- Speaking to God which provides additional information on cases where the addressee is God
- Speech acts which provides a pragmatics linguistic analysis of the intent of the speech act
Other related facets include:
- “The Commands in the Bible dataset is an extension of the Sentence Types of the Old Testament, Speech Acts of the Old Testament, Sentence Types of the New Testament, and Speech Acts of the New Testament datasets.[1]”
- “The Promises in the Bible dataset is an extension of the Sentence Types of the Old Testament, Speech Acts of the Old Testament, Sentence Types of the New Testament, and Speech Acts of the New Testament datasets.[2]”
- The Questions in the Bible dataset is an extension of the Sentence Types of the Old Testament, Speech Acts of the Old Testament, Sentence Types of the New Testament, and Speech Acts of the New Testament datasets.
Bible Browser
If you enter “Abraham” into the find box, the Bible Browser will offer references with Abraham as speaker and as addressees.
On mouse-over, a pop-up with basic information is shown.
On click, one activates the Bible Browser filter. Note that the Factbook Visual filter is clearly visible in the results.
Or, if you prefer to see Abraham as the addressee:
The normal ability to add other facets, to change translations, to see popups from the Factbook Visual filter, open Factbook on click from Factbook Visual filter, open Context Menu from text … all apply.
Interactive
None available
Context Menu, Information Panel, and Visual Filter
The Visual Filter has the addressee and speaker elements independently settable. While only the first shows in the Visual Filter Menu screen shot, both have been set on.
One must specifically request to see the Addressee and Speaker data in the Information panel.
This screen shot shows the results of both the Visual Filter and the Information Panel settings.
Reported Speech has limited Context Menu options – open Factbook or run a Search.
Search
From Reported Speech: Database Documentation:
Search
The Logos Search tool is a good way to use the Reported Speech Dataset. Here are some example searches that use Reported Speech. Note that an entity can be a person, group of people, place, or thing:
Every instance that an entity speaks:
{Speaker <Person Paul>}
Every instance that an entity is the addressee:
{Addressee <Place Jerusalem>}
Every instance where one entity is addressing another:
{Speaker <Person Jesus>} {Addressee <Person Disciples>}
Every instance where a speaker uses a specific word:
light WITHIN {Speaker <Person God>}[3]
